October Challenge Round Up

You’ve seen most of this stuff before so feel free to skip on but I really couldn’t pass up the opportunity for some self congratulatory back patting. (I could pretend that it’s just to make Azazel’s life easier when he comes to writing his community challenge round up but really it’s all about the backpatting!) Most hobbyists will be aware of Azazel’s Bitz Box and the monthly challenges he’s been running throughout 2018 (and if you’re not, make yourself aware and in short order!). October’s challenge called for the completion of a squad or squads, whether that be building and painting them from scratch or adding the last few layers to the final model that you’ve just never found the time for. As it turns out I managed to complete quite a few. Let’s take a look at them all.

When I posted the squad’s sergeant last week Alex, of Leadballoony fame, suggested that I’d forgotten to drill out the barrel, although in fact I thought I’d forgotten to paint in the lens. This led to an interesting discussion on how plasma weaponry actually works in the 41st Millennium. In the end I’m holding to my theory that the gun ends in a lens but, in the interest of keeping it from getting cracked and chipped, it should be recessed a little way inside the barrel.

Lest this new strength on the part of the Imperium go to humanity’s collective heads I recruited a few more Ork Nobs as well. As I’ve yet to see the Ork codex (which is fair enough, it’s not even officially released until tomorrow) I don’t know if this is still a full unit or not (it was in Index Xenos) but I’m going to count it for this month anyway. More Nobs will be forthcoming from me at some point, but for now I’m calling this squad done.

…whilst the Squigs may not be a full “official” unit (8th Edition Warhammer rules called for at least ten) I’ve painted all the models I own so I’ll be calling it at that for now as well.

The underground arms race between the goblins and the Skaven means it was vital that the ratmen brought in reinforcements to deal with all these extra greenies, so I also completed my squad of rat ogres. When I posted him the other day I forgot to include a group shot of the squad but not to worry, here’s one now!

Add in the various other things I’ve painted this month and it comes to a not insignificant 69 models. Suffice to say I’m rather proud of this progress but fear not, I won’t be resting on my laurels, there’s plenty more to come. Next on the list will be building my House Cawdor Stig-Shambler for Necromunda. The half of him that hits things still needs a little more work before he’s ready to show off but the half that does the thinking has been ready for action for a while, so here’s a little sneak peak of the brains behind the operation.

Good Ol’ Boyz – Bonus Grots!

Blame it on painting that old Ork but since then I’ve had a real itch to work on a few grots for him to boss around (after all the other lads are never going to stop picking on him for being short so he’ll need someone to bully in turn). Into the box of old models I go to fish out these two gretchin. Like the Ork (and plenty of other things that you’ll see in due course) these were a gift from my good mate Tom who’s been clearing out, so cheers once again dude.

This one’s face seems to have lost some of its definition over the years so I kept the highlighting there to a minimum and put extra effort into other areas in order to draw the eye away. And then I spoiled it by telling you all what I’d done.

Something about their devious, spiteful little faces made me think of redcaps – the evil goblins which supposedly dwelt in ruins along the border between Scotland and England and make a habit of murdering travellers and painting their hats with the resultant blood. Although I didn’t want to paint this one’s helmet as if actually bloody I did think that giving him a red cap would be a suitable homage to the nasty little bastards. Plus, maybe he reckons it makes his thoughts go faster?

We Come Up Wiv War! – Part 3

We Come Up Wiv War! – Part 2

The first Meganob of 2017 comes stomping off the painting desk. He’s pretty much built as per the box but with the addition of a Ironjaw Brute’s chestplate which adds a nice bit of extra bulk.

Never Enough Dakka – Part 4

Right lads – shoot ’em up! The squad of Ork shoota boys is completed by the addition of this Boss Nob. Again, the head is from Spellcrow, the rest of the Ork is Games Workshop.

Now we’re into the middle of winter, and with daylight in extremely short supply, it’s getting increasingly difficult to get any decent pictures of models. Hopefully though this gives you some idea of how he looks – although I acknowledge theat they’re not the best photos ever taken!

We Come Up Wiv War! – Part 1

The first Ork (and indeed the first Games Workshop miniature) I ever painted was a Meganob. At the time I knew next to nothing about the setting and picked the model based purely on its wonderfully belligerent aesthetics. Here was an Orc/k, a creature I’d grown up with through Lord of the Rings, stamping around in a suit of armour it appeared to have made by ripping up a tank – probably with his bare hands. The codex that I bought to accompany him describes how, so great and unwieldy is his bulk, a Meganob hit by a shell is likely to be found on his back, unharmed but struggling to right himself, often with the help of his straining comrades – something I’ve long wondered about converting.

However, in spite of my love for the model, it was also a little on the small side (given what it was intended to represent), heavy, rather expensive and prone to break (his jaw has to be glued back on every few weeks). Thus I refused to buy another until there was a decent boxset of plastic miniatures available. Even then I’ll confess it took me a while to get around to it but here we are at last with the first of a new mob.

Never Enough Dakka – Part 2

When I first started my Ork collection (seven years ago now? Longer?!) I set myself the challenge of never using the same head more than once on any of the infantry models. It’s a subtle little trick but it really adds to the sense of (small ‘c’) chaos and lack of uniformity in an Ork army, and helps to maintain that general aesthetic of unruliness in the face of unifying elements like a common colour scheme. It’s also very practical to achieve, there are just so many Ork heads available between the 40k and AoS ranges, without even starting on all the third-party companies out there.

Until now I’ve managed to stick to it. This gasmask from Spellcrow though – just too cool not to use twice!ork-bruvas-convert-or-die-1
