The Sorceress

Well check me out – I’ve managed to get something painted! It’s Fembruary once again, time for the annual painting challenge that encourages us to shake up our male dominated miniatures’ collections and give the ladies a chance to shine. I’ve got another project planned for this month but in case I don’t find the time to complete it I decided to start with this sorceress (or noble woman or something…) from the Black Crab range.

Mages, as we all know, are often accompanied by strange creatures that they have bound into their service so whilst I was about it I also painted up this weird beast to be her familiar.

Anyway, that’s me for now. Will there be more ladies before the month is out? Only time will tell!

Necropolis Nobles on Kickstarter

I don’t often promote kickstarters here, mostly because by the time I become aware of them it’s about six months after funding closed and I’ve missed out. This one however is one that I’ve had several enquires about from readers so more than merits me paying attention and giving a mention. In the past I’ve posted a few models from Black Crab, including these three weird looking characters…

… and this raggedy man.

I also have several more which I’m aiming to get painted… sooner or later. They make perfect civilians, particularly for the grubbier corners of the various Warhammer settings and would make fine additions to Mordheim or Cursed City, whilst being generic enough to sneak into a sci-fi setting like Necromunda. I’ve had several people ask me where I got them from but unfortunately the Black Crab range has only been available via their kickstarter campaigns. Right now however they’re having another campaign, this time to fund the creation of a beggar king and his court.

Begger Court

What’s more this means the older models are available once again. If you’re reading this right at the moment I hit publish then you have about four days to get your order in. If on the other hand you’re reading this several years in the future, well I tried to warn you!

The Oathbones – Part 8

More work on the Cawdor gang today, although it’s something of an odd-and-ends collection. First of all we have Harold, another ganger ready for the crusade.

Alongside him we have this chap from the second Black Crab kickstarter, originally intended as a civilian (either of the underhive, the Mortal Realms or the Old World – perhaps somewhere like Mordheim – he’s nicely ubiquitous). I didn’t want to take away from that by adding anything that would tie him too closely to one particular role but on the other hand I thought he’d work nicely as a Cawdor hanger on, specifically a gang lookout. I can picture him shuffling aimlessly through the dense crowds of a downhive settlement, just some crazy old beggar lost amid the masses. What’s that he’s muttering under his breath? Crazy rantings or prayers to the God-Emperor perhaps? Or is he whispering into a concealed vox, through which he reports everything he sees to his paymasters in House Cawdor?

As a result I painted him in a style which tied him in with my Cawdor gang but not so closely that he couldn’t find alternative employment in the future without looking too out of place.

Finally I decided it was high time I got around to my bomb rats. Long before Forge World released their (undeniably quirky, cool and official – if as ever rather expensive) version I’d already picked up a set from Anvil Industry. Of course a Cawdor gang without bomb rats is like a Goliath gang without muscles so I turned my attention to producing these most explosive of underhive residents.

There’s a couple more underhive crusaders still waiting for attention (in the short term – there’s pure hundreds of them to tackle in the pile of shame but I’m studiously ignoring them!) so I’ll aim to tackle them this week, then take a bit of a break and paint something else.
