In The Green Wood – Part 5

If you go down to the woods today you’re in for a big surprise…

If you go down to the woods today you’d better go in disguise…

In fact, all things considered you might be best not to go at all – more Sylvaneth are on the march! Once again I’ve been hacking my way through the jungle that covers my painting desk until these two tree men stepped into my path. These are the Kurnoth Hunters, living embodiments of the forest’s wrath who take very unkindly indeed to anyone who strays beneath the trees. One comes armed with a scythe with which to cut down any who threaten to disturb the wildwood…

…whilst the other prefers to pick off marauders at range using a mighty bow.

Together these two bring a bit of extra punch to my growing Sylvaneth collection.

Time for some ominous shaking of leaves and creaking of branches as two Tree Revenants emerge from the woodland depths.

Nor are they alone, the archer Ahnslaine of Ylthari’s Guardians joins them, ready to rain arrows on those who disturb the woodland depths.

Every time I paint Sylvaneth it comes home to me how quick and straightforward they are and I assure myself that I’ll hammer through the rest of the warband in short order. Work is absolutely flat out at the moment so I make no promises one way or the other but it would be nice to get this project completed so I’ll see what I can do.

One of the models I planned to tackle for the Fembruary challenge last year but didn’t get around to (although to be fair I did paint a hell of a lot of other women so I’ll let myself off) is this Branchwych. She’s one of my favourites from the Sylvanth range and I’ve been itching to tackle her for a while so I was determined that I wasn’t going to pass her over this time around.

I’ve actually dug out a few of my untouched Sylvaneth recently, it’s past time these treefolk got a bit of paint on them, so expect to see more of them emerging from the woods soon.

Back to the forest depths this time with two more Dryads for my little collection of Sylvaneth. Once again there’s nothing terribly fancy here, just a bit of quick and dirty washes and drybrushing to bring out the woody texture. To be honest though I’m not sure if there is any other way to paint Sylvaneth.

Despite being painted six months apart they tie in fairly well with the pair I painted back in February, as well as the more recent Spite-Revenant.

Needless to say this is another project that is far from over, I’ve got plenty more treefolk waiting for attention.

In The Green Wood – Part 1

Ever since I painted a pair of dryads back in February I’ve had an itch to tackle some more Sylvaneth. I’ve gathered together enough for (you guessed it) a Warcry warband which I’ll chip away at over the next little while. First to emerge from the woods we have this Spite-Revenant.

Like the dryads this one was fairly quick and easy to paint up so I’ll aim to get a few more done soon-ish.

Dryads

I seem to have something of a reputation as having something against elves but that’s really not true at all. As every Chaos fan knows, properly cooked an elf can be amongst the finest of all fantasy creatures! Back in the days of WHFB I toyed with the idea of starting either a Dark Elf army, a Wood Elf army or perhaps even kitbashing a combination of the two. Alas neither project ever got off the ground. In the case of the Wood Elves the miniatures generally left a lot to be desired and, despite a few stellar models that appeared in the later years, the range overall never really looked as good in the cold light of day as it did in my mind’s eye.

One set of models I did always like though were the dryads. I’ve had a set of them knocking around for absolutely ages but never quite got around to doing anything with them. However in the course of the headlong charge through my unpainted backlog that I’ve been undertaking lately I found myself thinking about these tree-women and, as they are fine candidates for Fembruary, I decided to assemble a couple of them and see how I got on.

Just as my unrealised Dark Elf army is now finding a new lease of life via my Daughters of Khaine Warcry warband these woodland folk may end up following a similar path, I reckon I have enough kicking around to make a little warband. Who knows, I may even manage to paint some of the other treefolk ladies by the end of the month.
