The Emperor’s Angels – Part 14

Tainted as they are by the vampiric curse of their bloodline the Knights Mortis avoid the harsh daylight, preferring to attack by night or under cover of ash clouds raised by a preliminary orbital bombardment. Where this proves impossible the Brotherhood of the Sun are dispatched. These warriors hark most strongly in appearance and behaviour to their forebears in the Blood Angels legion, and particularly to their sire The Great Angel. Each must be a superlative warrior for, even sealed within their power-armour and sheltered by layers upon layers of screens and enviro-filters, the unbending traditionalists of the chapter command will often refuse to give battle until full darkness shrouds the field. This does not deter the stalwart knights of the Brotherhood of the Sun however who, fighting unaided in some of the most challenging battlegrounds, claim great honour for themselves and their chapter.

Wow, I’ve not painted one of my Knights Mortis space marines since 2018. How time has flown by eh!

Excellent work Wudu, your chapter has a lot of character, and great use of different kits to give a very unique looking marine (which is not an easy task)

    • Wudugast

Thanks Dave! I do find there’s a lot of potential to be explored in the space marines, plenty of room for the grim and the gothic, but it’s also all too easy for them to be, dare I say it, a bit bland. I’ve tried to come up with a background that leans into the darker, stranger and less heroic side of the marines and then reflect it in the models. Glad you like him 🙂

Very nice! 🙂 I like the balance between metal and red!

  • Kuribo

This post is disturbing. What will the gods of Chaos think of this, mate? 😀 In all seriousness, I really like the Blood Angels and enjoy painting red so you can bet that I love to see this mini. I can’t tell what is converted but I love all the extra iconography on this marine all the same. Having some silver parts mixed in with the gold and red was a really good idea as well. It gives the marine a nice color balance and just looks cool to boot! 🙂

The Gods of Chaos will be glad to have someone to fight, and they get their own way around here too much anyway! 😂 He’s a mix of parts from various Blood Angels kits on the body of a standard intercessor, then the solar shoulder pad comes from the Empire demigryph knights. Glad you like the colour scheme, always good to get a stamp of approval from a painting master such as yourself 😎

😀 Fair enough! That’s very clever using some Empire parts, I would have never guessed. Haha, you have my blessings to enter GD after this one. You had them before but even more so now! 😉

Gorgeous reds & a lovely subdued quality to the paint job mate, there’s a faded grandeur that is hard to describe but is really cool

    • Wudugast

Thanks dude! Faded grandeur is exactly what I wanted to capture with this project, I think it’s key to the whole vibe of the Blood Angels and their successors. I feel that they have this sense that they were once angels, they have all this pomp and bling that they’ve inherited, and yet it’s all been smashed and painstakingly repaired and smashed again and again through ten millennia of war and the marines themselves are just killers, murderous blood drinking monsters. I think they are burdened by an idealised past that they can never live up to, and yet that’s also central to their identity. Yes, I sleep in a coffin and I sometimes get so hungry I eat one of my chapter thralls, and sooner or later I’ll die in a berserk rage because I have genetic PTSD over the death of my father and I’m burdened with guilt that I didn’t save him even though it happened ten thousand years before I was born, but look I have this nice old shiny sword so I must be one of the good guys right..? And sometimes they must stop and look at the sword in question and realise that it’s really not as shiny and nice as they imagine it was back in the good old days when the Great Angel walked amongst them, and maybe, if they’re honest with themselves, he might not recognise or even like them anymore. He united the galaxy and they’re loosing it bit by bit, and you start to wonder; would the man said to be the most beautiful and heroic of all the primarchs really want a vampire for a son? Of course doubt begets heresy so let’s just clean the blood stains off this shiny old sword and fight one more war, and maybe that’ll be the one to redeem us and turn the tide, and of course it never will.

I don’t think I remember ever seeing loyalists from you! I guess I missed your last one as I think I was just getting to the blog-o-sphere back in ’18. But anyways, I quite like the model. The reds pop nicely, and I like the slight asymmetry with the red right forearm.

    • Wudugast

Haha – I’m a filthy traitor at heart but now and again one of the Emperor’s servants slips through! Cheers, I’ve always liked a bit of asymmetrical heraldry on space marines and the gunmetal grey I’d used elsewhere just didn’t look right for that arm.

  • Faust

Good to see you still getting some minis painted! I like the red and silver (plus gold) combo. The metal has a nice tarnished look to it too!

    Excellent, excellent, excellent

Well top work again Wudda! After seeing all that amazing and brilliant work I must away and get the good wife to pour me a stiff Scotch whiskey and ponder how lowly I am in the Modelling world! (: .

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Ah, you know you’re not lowly – and certainly not in the modelling world. However that’s no reason not to ask your wife to pour you a large whisky all the same (and one for herself whilst she’s about it, if she’s anywhere near as long suffering as mine she deserves it!).

Speak, damn you!
