The Sorceress

Well check me out – I’ve managed to get something painted! It’s Fembruary once again, time for the annual painting challenge that encourages us to shake up our male dominated miniatures’ collections and give the ladies a chance to shine. I’ve got another project planned for this month but in case I don’t find the time to complete it I decided to start with this sorceress (or noble woman or something…) from the Black Crab range.

Black Crab Noble Wudugast (1)Black Crab Noble Wudugast (2)

Mages, as we all know, are often accompanied by strange creatures that they have bound into their service so whilst I was about it I also painted up this weird beast to be her familiar.

Anyway, that’s me for now. Will there be more ladies before the month is out? Only time will tell!

Both look excellent Wudu, the rich purple gives her a sinister look to her, and the familiar is wonderfully strange

Thank you! I’ve always felt that mages/wizards are – perhaps not malevolant per se but certainly a little sinister. They dabble with powers beyond the ken of mortal man, and they often work towards a big picture agenda which may or may not be in the best interests of the kings and nations which they purport to serve. Of course in this instance she’s just a richly dressed lady with an unusual pet right… right..?

Excellent work Wudu old chap and good to see you are finding some time to paint between midnight feeds and nappy changing. 😉

Both look great and I really like that purple on the dress. Yes, with a daughter, I’m really noticing how male dominated my minis collection is. I mean, it should be 50-50, right?! Part of Fembruary, and the rest of this year I’m hoping to work on that.

Cheers! Exactly – I know these are wargames, and war is traditionally male dominated, particularly where brute strength and an inclination towards violence comes in. However that still leaves lots of opportunities for the ladies to play a roll. In recent years things have improved a lot – time was women were thin on the ground in these games, and tended to be “sexy” versions. “Oopsie, I turned up for this battle but I’m such an airhead I forgot to get dressed!” – as an inspiration to young women I think they’d have been better off not including them at all. These days though we see a much better range and – dare I say it – diversity of female characters in miniatures and long may that continue.

Yea, I can only hope it gets better. In the Frostgrave/Stargrave minis, they seem to release 1 box of female minis to every 2-3 male minis. Way better than years before, that’s for sure. It there’s something else going on too…As I was looking through my minis and trying to find some good female ones to paint, I noticed that the coolest looking minis happened to be the male ones. They either had cooler armor/weapons or more interesting poses. So that probably adds another reason why I have so many male minis. I think GW does a better job of that though, as I do recall quite a few female minis they out out that are really cool. Eschers being one from top of my head. So I guess there is hope out there.

Both very nice, although I think the familiar is my favourite! 🙂

Its great to see you an update from you, mate. I like the nun, though I don’t want to go to the church she works at, at the same time! 🙂 The familiar is a great touch too. These make quite a nice pair and have colors that work well together too.

Excellent work. I’ve got this same model on my table ready for painting. I love the range of models they are really satisfying to paint.

Lovely striking colour work on both of these, Wudu – that familiar is far bigger than I expected at first!
