Dread Legions

You may recall that earlier in the year I painted up Khagra’s Ravagers, the Warriors of Chaos warband from Warhammer Underworlds. I’ve had a plan to use them as the basis for a Warcry warband and so, with the middle of the year almost upon us, I decided to knuckle down and get this objective ticked off the list – starting with this angry man and his rather fashionable cloak.

In case you were concerned that painting a few elves last year had changed me fear not, this champion of the Dark Gods reminds us of the fate that all pointy-eared scum deserve!

I like to include as wide a variety of models as possible in my Warcry warbands so I decided my next recruit for my Chaos Warriors should be welding a double handed axe. At first I looked at ways of converting one but, as I was raking through the bits box, I spotted this guy lurking shame-faced after failing to make the cut for a long forgotten project. Originally he served as the charioteer for the Chaos Chariot and to be honest I’ve never particularly liked him. However as I looked at him I started to realise he was perfect for the job, and that I’d probably like him a lot more if he was painted. I’m still not entirely sure about him but he does the job and having paid something for him all those years ago I’m pleased to have found a use for him at last.

I also wanted a Chaos Warrior with a halberd to round out the warband. Leaked images that are doing the rounds online suggest that we’ll be getting an official kit for these before the year is out but I’m not going to wait around for that when I can convert one of my own by adding a Skaven halberd to one of the warriors from the “Start Collecting…” set.

Finally I’ve had this Chaos Chosen sitting around for a while, since I kitbashed him back in September of 2020 in fact (which was not “just a few months ago” despite what my warped sense of time is currently telling me). I’ve been wanting to get him painted up and working on my Warriors of Chaos warband turned out to be the perfect spur to do just that.

Put them all together and we have a generously sized warband, with a range of options and a choice of either an Aspiring Champion, Exalted (Chosen) Champion or a Sorcerer Lord to act as the leader.

For now I’m calling this project done but in time I’d like to come back to them, as I’ve got loads of other ideas I’d like to try building and kitbashing. I really like the idea of an all mounted warband, a party of twisted knights and their followers. In the meantime however these dark champions are ready to set foot on the path to glory!

Fantastic warband mate – I love the mix of minis, they really do form a superb group. We really should try to get together sometime for a weekend of Warcry you know! I’d love to pit my RoW crew against yours ✊

Looking good – I’m a fan of the new chaos warrior models and your conversion work is great here!

A mean looking bunch to be sure! 🙂 Very nicely done!

Fantastic looking little chaps mate and that red is so cool. Love the group shot too but what really grabbed my attention was your idea of an all mounted warband. That sounds like a must in my book. 🙂

Excuse me – I’m falling right behind on my reading and replying. Roll on the end of the month and the return of a work/life balance I say! Anyway, glad you like these lads and I’m very pleased that you like the sound of a mounted warband as it was actually seeing your knights that put it back in my mind. Ages ago GW did a range of Bretonians which were basically medieval knights with a slight Arthurian/Monty Python spin. They weren’t the best models in the range and there was nothing terribly original about them, so in the end GW canned them – to great wailing and gnashing of teeth from their fans. At the time I had a plan to make an all mounted Chaos army, which never really came to anything when I remembered that I’m not the biggest fan of painting horses (something of a hurdle there I think you’ll agree!). Anyway, one of my ideas for the army was to do a unit of knights based on the chivalric Bretonians but twisted to look evil, as opposed to the “barbarian horselords” that we had with the wider Chaos range. Like I say, seeing your knights brought the idea back to me so it’s something I might look at, but rather than trying to paint a whole army I’d just tackle a warband. I’ve got a few horses on the desk for another project at the moment so if I can manage them without too much bother I’ll give this a go.

Nice to tick a project off the list. I’m having trouble deciding on a favourite here mate. I think they’re all very nasty looking pieces of art to be honest. Ironically I think the charioteer is my favourite. His weapon screams “YOU’RE ALL GOING TO DIE” and I like that in a weapon.

This group looks great and I like the huge axe wielder best of all. There’s something about chaos armies that just lend themselves to conversions as well. Overall though, I was offended by this post. What you did to that elf was completely uncalled for! 😉

    • Wudugast

How do you know? It might have been a nasty elf that went around kicking over flowers and bothering innocent fairies. These upstanding gentlemen might have done us all a favour by putting an end to his misdeeds – you can never be too sure with elves! 😀

These guys all look bloody great, Wudu! The axeman does look great with these guys and fits nicely, while the halberdier shows how the simplicity of a straightforward conversion can create another great looking model!

    • Wudugast

Thanks mate! Aye, it doesn’t always have to be anything fancy for a conversion – I enjoy the complicated stuff but sometimes a simple weapon-swap is all it needs. 🙂

Speak, damn you!
