For a very long time I’ve been a fan of the Death Korps of Krieg but as they were only available in expensive Forge World resin I held off. Now that a plastic kit is available for them however I can resist no longer! That said I’ve got various other miniatures on the go and I’m not about to plunge into a whole new project (tempting though that is). However despite firmly telling myself to concentrate my efforts elsewhere I couldn’t resist painting up a couple of them and finally getting to grips with an Imperial Guard regiment that I’ve loved from afar for over a decade.
Even under fire this guardsman pauses to check what he’s supposed to do next in his copy of the Imperial Infantryman’s Uplifting Primer (copy on loan only and to be returned undamaged in the event of his death).
More of these will follow, although probably not for a while – unless of course my resolve crumbles altogether, which given how much fun I had painting these is entirely possible…

The krieg are looking great with that paint job! I am tempted too, but I will complete what I have before ‘rewarding’ myself with more painting!
January 24th, 2022 at 1:26 pm
Thank you! I’m trying to do the same, I got the Kill Team Octarius set, but I’m really trying to clear out a few half-finished projects before I get any more. Mind you I think we’ve established that you have far more self discipline when it comes to this hobby than I do but my intentions are good!

Nice and gritty 👍
Is that guy reading the “How to Kill Stuff” manual?
January 24th, 2022 at 1:27 pm
Cheers! Yeah, the poor bloke didn’t know what he was getting himself into when he saw that on the job training was provided!
January 24th, 2022 at 1:46 pm
😂
January 24th, 2022 at 11:01 am
Ooh, excellent, godda love a bit of Krieg! I’m looking forward to seeing how far down this particular rabbit hole you go 😁
January 24th, 2022 at 1:27 pm
Thanks man! Well, the plan is to try to clear out a few half-finished projects first (and we all know how plans like that turn out) and paint the rest of the squad from the Kill Team set. After that we’ll see if I’m still feeling as enthusiastic as I am at the moment, but potentially I could see myself going a long way down this rabbit hole indeed!
January 24th, 2022 at 12:04 pm
Nicely painted, especially like the faded blue coat and the freehand booklet.
January 24th, 2022 at 1:30 pm
Thank you! I’m especially pleased with the coats, it was a bit of an experiment but I think it turned out well and it should be easy enough to replicate on the rest of the squad.
January 24th, 2022 at 1:06 pm
Nicely done Wudu. Definitely a Nazi vibe in those helmets.
January 24th, 2022 at 2:02 pm
Cheers! Yeah, there is something a little bit Nazi-ish about them isn’t there? It’s pleasing that in this era of “wokeness” and cancel culture GW still have the stomach to release a kit like this (especially after they toned down the Necromunda Redemptionists and removed anything that might look even vaguely KKKish). It’s always been one of the most compelling aspects of 40k that the Imperium (as the central human faction) are such utterly dreadful totalitarian, autocratic, xenophobic religious fundamentalists yet those who seek personal freedom and a better life are inevitably drawn into the clutches of the Chaos Gods or some kind of alien cult. Like Judge Dread, from which 40k borrowed a lot of early ideas, the setting is supposed to pastiche totalitarianism, and yet a lot of people seem to miss the point and see the Imperium as the good guys. Which is fair enough, everyone should do the hobby they enjoy and I’m sure there are plenty of good people in the Imperium doing their best to get by, but without factions like the Death Korps the setting would loose a lot of it’s narrative complexity and we’d all be poorer for it. Anyway, I’ll get down off my high horse now! 😁
January 24th, 2022 at 6:12 pm
Those are really, really nice! 🙂 I’m hoping your resolve crumbles pretty soon and you feel compelled to paint some more!
January 25th, 2022 at 6:47 am
Thank you! Well, my resolve is never great at the best of times and the desire to start an army of these guys is strong at the moment!
January 24th, 2022 at 8:09 pm
Looking fantastic there. I’ve resisted the urge for Krieg so far, but you’re making it difficult!
January 28th, 2022 at 8:12 pm
Thank you! So far I’ve only got the ones from the Kill Team box but I’m very tempted to pick up some more now they’re available separately. This could be what finally gets me to start an Imperial Guard army. I know how hard it can be to resist new models and I probably shouldn’t try to tempt you further but… “join us… join us…” 😉
January 25th, 2022 at 12:19 am
They are fantastic- worth getting a Kill Team of them imo at least.
Cheers,
Pete.
January 28th, 2022 at 10:25 pm
Thank you! I’ll definitely do a Kill Team, after that who knows? An army is very tempting but I’m not going to bite off more than I can chew (at least until I’ve chewed what I’ve already got!).
January 25th, 2022 at 9:50 pm
Fan-bloody-tastic mate. As you know I too loooove the Krieg. I love the scheme and can’t wait to see more recruits turn up ready to sacrifice everything for the God Emperor.
January 28th, 2022 at 10:27 pm
Cheers man! I really want to see what you end up doing with your Kreig forces when you get around to them. The new troopers are really nice as they are but I’m already having a think about how to kitbash them to fill some of the other roles in the army (Commissar, heavy weapons, tank commander etc). I really wish they’d do a plastic kit for Rough Riders though, can’t have Death Korps without Rough Riders!
January 29th, 2022 at 9:56 pm
I wonder if GW will expand the range. Fingers crossed.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:04 am
Would be soooo good if they did. Certainly rough riders have been missing from the Imperial Guard range for a long time and I would argue that the most iconic of them, and so the obvious choice for miniatures, would be those of the Death Korps (sorry Attilans!). Dunno if you saw it but there was a list of forthcoming 40k releases that leaked from GW back in about September of last year? Usually I don’t pay these things any mind because they’re normally bollocks but this one has proved to be bang on (about half of the list has now proved to be true, and a lot of the details were uncannily accurate, the other half of the list is still TBC but nothing proved wrong as yet). Anyway, it lists more releases for Imperial Guard coming in 2022. Bit more vague on this one than on some of the other factions but it describes new “veteran-style” Cadians, 2 other new regiments, new Kasrkin and a new vehicle a bit bigger than the Russ. Like I say it’s been absolutely bang on the money about everything else so far so I’m inclined to believe it. Of course if it’s true that suggests no additional Kreig or rough riders for the foreseeable but given the apparent popularity and enthusiasm for Kreig I’d not be surprised if GW know money when they see it and are already pencilling them in for some work in the further future.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:02 pm
Oh wow that does sound exciting. As they’ve started with Krieg maybe they’ll continue with it. It’d be my assumption that the fans would prefer more plastic Krieg than they would Cadian. For me though, I’ll take anything as long as it’s imperial guard hehe. I regret selling my Karskin years ago? 😞 This was back when I didn’t realise their worth and just how cool they were.
February 2nd, 2022 at 8:22 pm
Aye, it’d certainly be my preference to see more Kreig rather than more Cadians. I like the Cadians well enough, and they’re nice to use as the basis for conversions, but they’re a bit generic which doesn’t seem to be GW’s jam anymore. I thought Cadia might have been retired after that whole incident with Abaddon’s 13th Crusade, but they’re still getting lots of attention in the backstory so maybe GW have learnt their lesson from WHFB – blowing up a planet turns the inhabitants from “past their best” to “beloved underdogs” in a heartbeat!
I’d be pleased to see Karskin come back, although in many ways I thought the Tempestus Scions had taken over that role. One thing I will add is that the list I mentioned didn’t mention Tyranids, which we now know are coming soon, but other than that it was spot on to the letter. The guy clearly didn’t know everything but that aside he’s been spot on, and very precise and detailed. I’m hoping his accuracy holds up because according to him there’s a lot of Chaos on the way too!
February 2nd, 2022 at 8:46 pm
Ahh I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you on the Chaos front my friend. Let’s keep all our fingers and toes crossed together for more Krieg hehe
January 26th, 2022 at 2:31 am
I don’t know if I can claim to be too big of a fan when I haven’t painted one before but I also really like the Krieg. They’re the closest mashup of Sci-Fi and WWI minis you’ll ever find. I reckon these really suit your painting style too. They should be a bit dirty and grimy or they just won’t look right! 🙂 Great job on these first two!
January 28th, 2022 at 10:29 pm
Cheers! Yeah, a man who stands around on the parade ground looking all nice when he could be giving his life for the Emperor in a filthy trench isn’t one who’s going to be tolerated in the Death Korps for long! Glad you like them mate, and yes I think you can call yourself a fan without having painted one. After all I’ve been claiming to be a fan of them for years and these are the first two I’ve ever put a brush to.

Love the models! You did miss one edit, though. Change:
“available in expensive Forge World resin I held off. Now that a plastic kit is available for them ”
to:
“available in expensive Forge World resin I held off. Now that an expensive Games Workshop plastic kit is available for them ”
and you’ll be good!
😉

You’re not wrong, it’s eye-wateringly pricey isn’t it? I’m still tempted but I’m holding off on getting any more until I’ve painted the ones I’ve got, then we’ll see. I’d love a load of the new traitor guard as well to reinvigorate my old traitor guard army but at the end of the day I can’t get everything. I have at least assembled most of my existing Kreig troops now so I’ll try to get them done soon and then see if I’m going to lead myself into further temptation or if something else will distract my butterfly mind instead!
June 25th, 2022 at 8:45 am
I know the feeling. So much to paint and so little time!
