Mo’vember Slayers

Time to tackle some more hairy dudes in the name of Mo’vember. As soon as I saw the challenge being run at Rantings From Under The Wargames Table I knew it would be a good chance to work on my (very slow burning) WHFB Dwarf army. After all, dwarves and facial hair are practically synonymous. Enter three grumpy little Slayers from Avatars of War, in search of a honourable death.

I took the chance to mix things up by giving the third one some tattoos. Nothing fancy as it’s still an area I need to practice.

With these three done I just need to find the first one I painted and I’ll have almost finished the first rank of the first unit of this army. I told you this was a slow burning project!

Tomorrow, something else for Mo’vember – something much, much bigger and fatter…

Excellent submissions for movember mate, I’m sure Roger will be chuffed. 🙂

Very nice- they look the part to me. Suitably archetypical for a dwarf.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

Always nice to see some nicely painted beardy chaps and there is something appropriate about someone who has a beard that paints them too 🙂 I sure hope we see some Slayers in The Old World one of these days! I miss ’em!

Cheers! It’s almost method painting isn’t it – first grow a beard then paint some dwarves. Best not to speculate about what one has to do if one wants to paint Nurgle in this fashion… or Slaanesh..!
Slayers in The Old World would be fantastic. They are one of the most iconic of GW’s creatures, to me nothing says “Warhammer” like a Slayer. It was a real shame to see them die with WHFB, and sadly the Fyreslayers really aren’t the same thing at all.

I’ll remember to let my beard grow out next time I’ve got a dwarf to paint 😉 I agree on the Fyreslayers. While I think they’re fine, they just aren’t as cool as the old dwarves!

The Fyreslayers, to my mind, suffer from the same problem as the Lumineth – they’re similar enough to one of the old WHFB races (Slayers and High Elves respectively) to draw comparison but they’re different enough that it’s noticeable. Some of the new factions like the Stormcasts or the Kharadron Overlords stand on their own two feet as unique in their own right. Others like the Gloomspite Gits, the Orcs or the various Chaos factions could be transplanted into the Old World and no-one would notice the difference. But the Fyreslayers are similar enough to Slayers that they remind us all how cool new Slayers would have been, how much we wanted them to be released and how they still don’t exist. At least by the time the Lumineth came along AoS had bedded in and we got something that felt like it belonged to the new setting. The Fyreslayers were cursed by arriving too early, they were the first “made for AoS” faction after the Stormcasts and they really had to win people to the new setting, something they just weren’t going to be able to do when everyone already had pre-conceived ideas about what a Slayer should be.

That is well-said, mate! I completely agree with everything you’ve said. I think the Fyreslayers need a twist and some kind of update to make them more interesting. GW is good at doing that when they update codex/army books so maybe they will get that one day. I’m not holding my breath but I think there is potential with the faction still for sure!

Nice bearded Dwarves (are there any other kind?)

  • Azazel

Whoa, whoa, whoa – slow down there hotshot. That’s too many dwarves too fast!
On a more serious note, they look great – and certainly good enough to me that they’re making me want to paint some more dwarves of my own. The bloody ogre in the next post had that effect as well – bastard!

    • Wudugast

Haha – don’t worry, that’s my annual output of dwarves painted for another year I reckon. At this rate I should have the army done before they cart me off to the old people’s home, but only just!
Aye, that’s the problem with reading other people’s blogs isn’t it? I usually go through that kind of temptation at least a dozen times a day!

      • Azazel

I actually went looking for half-painted dwarves after this post, but I couldn’t find any. I know there’s some plastic ones somewhere, but I found something else beardy (that I didn’t manage to finish before the timer ran out!)

They look great and I love the orange and blue colour theme

  • Argentbadger

Excellent stuff. The bright orange beards are so classically GW Dwarf that it’s almost strange now to see these Slayers from a third party company.

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Aye, you’re not wrong there – they’re one of the most iconic GW creations but GW doesn’t do anything with them anymore and other people have moved into the vacuum. Imagine that happening with Space Marines!

Speak, damn you!
