The Littlest Player

After painting that Chaos Blocker the other day I was feeling the itch to work on some more Blood Bowl and dug out all the various part finished models that are in the queue. However rather than tackle any of the obvious ones my hand settled instead on this little dude. Work and other real life stuff has me running around like a mad thing right now so rather than tackling anything too big or complex I instead decided that the smallest and most straightforward model on the desk was definitely the one for me.

I picked up the Snotling Blood Bowl team last year as a pat on the back to myself for completing the Chaos Knight I’d been working on since forever. At the time I joked that buying 18 snotlings (plus 2 pump wagons and various other gubbins) as a reward for painting 1 knight made my numbers look terrible when it comes to clearing my backlog but it couldn’t possibly take me as long to get the team painted as it did the knight. Will time make a liar of me? The jury is still out… Anyway, my plan was to work on the Snotlings in short order because they looked like a lot of fun to paint but then it occurred to me that I might actually like to try playing Blood Bowl and so should work on my (at the time long neglected) Orc team so I had something sensible to learn the game with, as opposed to the famously silly and challenging to play Snotlings. So this test model was left to gather dust until the other day when I took pity on him and decided he deserved to be finished.

I wouldn’t usually make a post for a single figure that’s as small as this one, preferring to save it and post it alongside a few of its peers, however the truth of the matter is that might well be a long time coming. Once things settle down a bit I want to finish up my various other WIP teams (the Humans, the Elves and finishing up that troll for the Orcs) before this guy gets any more company. Hopefully that won’t take me quite as many years as that Chaos Knight did in the end…

Quite different for you and probably not the work you were looking for but he looks rather cute. I do like the composotion I must say. 🙂

    • Wudugast

Yup, cute is definitely the word (he probably thinks he looks tough though so let’s not shatter the little fellow’s dreams!). He was a nice change of pace for me – although he’s still essentially an Orc, just a very, very small one…

He’s lovely mate, but wow, Snotlings… talk about playing BB on Insane Mode!!! Unless you are up against Halflings of course… then you’re just playing on Hard Mode 😂

    • Wudugast

I know right! Definitely not a team to be learning with but once I get my head around the rules I can see them having two key advantages. 1. People will look at me and say “Wow, he must really know what he’s doing, he’s playing Snotlings!”. 2. No-one will judge me harshly for coaching my team to a catastrophic series of devastating losses…

A fantastic little miniature, I really like this diminutive fellow. Does make me wonder how he carries the ball if it were to ever fall to him – what with needing both hands for his stilts! Still, never mind that! Excellent work :^)

    • Wudugast

I don’t think any snotling has ever thought as far ahead as what to do if he actually gets his hands on the ball. I think the answer is, he fumbles desperately for it, falls off his stilts and is trampled by the big people but he’s not going to let that put him off!

That is a great mini- certainly got the best out of a tiny sculpt.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

Seriously, this is just brilliantly painted FUN! I’m all smiles!

    • Wudugast

Thank you! I think Blood Bowl is at its best when it faces up to being silly and fun and just leans into that side of things, most miniatures games focus on being serious and much as I enjoy that Blood Bowl is a real breath of fresh air sometimes. 🙂

Nice one, mate! Will look great with his teammates I’m sure. I still haven’t decided what color I’ll paint Snotlings. I think I want them a different color than Goblins to differentiate them more. If memory serves, Underworld can get some Snotlings in the new rules? Which means goblins and snots could be on the same field. Will have to double check that one. I’ll probably go yellow on them, as that seems appropriate. Hmm, that kinda makes me want to get started on them right away. Now see what you’ve done, haha!

    • Wudugast

Good grief – something about Blood Bowl that you didn’t know categorically off the top of your head?! Who are you and what have you done with the real Faust? Fear not, I went and checked the Goode Bok and yes, Underworlds teams can indeed take up to six snotlings. I wouldn’t worry too much about them being confused with gobbos, they’re a lot smaller than them. That said yellow would look cool on them, or how about a dirty off-yellow like the new hobgoblins? In fact there’s a new Hobgrot Hide paint coming out which might be good for that? Not that you should wait for it, ride that wave of enthusiasm and paint some now! (Seriously, they’re only tinchy small, you’d could knock a few of them out in no time). 🙂

I’m so used to the original rosters, that 2020 has thrown me for a bit of a loop (well, in more than just games!). I’ve got most of it down, but changes to Underworld were somewhat fast and furious and the Snotlings kind of came in under the radar. Well, that’s my whole rationale! 😉

New paint?! Oh man, I really need that like a bullet to the head. I’ve spent so much money on paints the last two months, it’s sickening. I really need to do up that ‘paint post’ that I keep mentioning too. Just looked it up…three new base paints. Not bad, at least it isn’t a whole new line. That’s when things really go crazy!

  • Argentbadger

What a cutie! Are Snotlings back to being in the game again? I vaguely recall a version in the 90s where there was some kind of option to throw your own Snotlings about the place (which of course is still in the game via Right Stuff) and also for the other side to hit them back with cricket bats.

    • Wudugast

Haha – that sounds very Blood Bowl! Yes, they’re back in the game, as of last summer. You can field a whole team of them now, they can even bring on a couple of pump wagons. Not that they’re very good at the game but that’s not really the point is it? 😂

  • Kuribo

Great job on this one, mate! Snotlings are something I wish GW brought back a bit more as they are great fun. Painting up a Blood Bowl team of them does sound like a lot of fun to me. Also, the Snotling Pump Wagon is peak Warhammer Fantasy in my book 😀 My younger brother painted a metal one back in the day though I don’t think either of us have it anymore.

    • Wudugast

Pump wagons are ace aren’t they! You can take two of them on the Blood Bowl team as well (so yes, I will indeed be painting them sooner or later). I’d love to see them do more with snotlings in general though – in fact that would be a cool AoS army now that the focus is back on the forces of Destruction. Not that I reckon it’ll happen of course, but GW – if you’re reading this – I’d be all over an all-snotling army. Make it so guys, make it so!

Oh I’m glad you did post this little fellow as he is so bloody cute!! Ha Ha!!

Speak, damn you!
