Last night was another evening of frantic painting and, as a result, here’s another model finished for this year’s Fembruary challenge. I must admit I’m really enjoying just powering through all these unfinished miniatures, I wouldn’t – and couldn’t – want to paint at this rate all the time but it’s fun to just crack my knuckles, break out the brushes, put on some music and make a heroic headlong charge at the painting backlog.
Anyway, today’s model is Aradia Madellan, the sanctioned psyker from the Blackstone Fortress Escalation expansion (not to be confused with the unsanctioned psykers from the original game – those are very bad lads indeed and not in any way to be confused with a valiant servant of the Imperium like this lady).
With her done I’m not only one step closer to completing the all the models for the game (although I’ve still got a fair way to go on that front) but I’ve also, very fittingly for Fembruary, completed all the female explorers. In fact we could now, and why wouldn’t we, take an all female team in search of xenotech in the weird, shifting corridors of the Blackstone Fortress.
Not only that but I’ve also painted all five characters from the Escalation expansion, so that’s another milestone achieved. At some point I should really get around to painting all of the characters from the original game as well…
Is there more painting planned for this evening? Damn right there is!

Fantastic mate. I’m loving the roll you’re on and I enjoy those streaks too. What’s your preference of music to listen to while painting?
February 16th, 2021 at 1:17 pm
Cheers mate! Usually for music I listen to metal, but I think I’ve got quite a wide ranging taste. Depends on my mood really, sometimes I just want to chill out, paint a miniature and listen to something relaxed. Last night I needed something to give me energy to keep powering through, so I stuck on an ’80s metal playlist I found, loads of old thrash, perfect 😎🤘

Haha excellent!! Do you have Spotify?
February 17th, 2021 at 9:19 am
I do indeed. I use it to listen to your podcast (amongst other things!).
February 17th, 2021 at 9:09 pm
Ok mate I’ll email you my “warhammer playlist” hehe. It’s an atmospheric type thing so not much in the way of 80s thrash but you might like it. The family think I’m nuts when I play it and paint mini haha
February 17th, 2021 at 9:55 pm
Cheers dude – I’ll look forward to it. 🙂

Man, you are on fire! Superb mini mate, she’s very cool
February 16th, 2021 at 1:27 pm
Cheers dude! When I started I didn’t really think I would manage this much, I just wanted to try and batter through a few unfinished projects and this seemed like a good excuse. I’ve ended up doing a lot more than I expected though – god only knows how I’m going to top this next year though! 😅

Super model individually but those group shots really make for a very impressive line up. 🙂
February 17th, 2021 at 9:19 am
Cheers – they do look good as a team don’t they? I always think the quality of a miniature is always improved when they’re part of a group – I remember some of the first things I painted and, being honest with myself, recognising that they weren’t all that great, but when I put them all together as a squad they suddenly looked so much better. Maybe that’s part of why I’m drawn to painting warbands/teams/armies more than single figures now I think about it. Anyway, seeing them all together is inspiring me to finish up the rest of the set now!
February 17th, 2021 at 11:04 am
Agree completely. Even though I do individual figures which often have no relationship to others I’ve done they look more impressive when they are grouped together. 🙂

Kicking ass dude, keep it up!
February 17th, 2021 at 9:44 am
Cheers! 🙂

You are firing through! And looking great, is the game any good by the way never got round to getting it.
February 17th, 2021 at 10:10 pm
Cheers! Yeah, we’ve enjoyed playing it a lot. I never played any of the previous Warhammer Quests so I don’t know how it compares but we’ve had a lot of fun with Blackstone Fortress. It’s very much about working as a team and playing collaboratively against the NPC Chaos forces. Both my partner and her brother don’t really go in for games that pit players against each other so we tend to break this out when he comes to visit. We’ve not played any of the expansions yet though, just the core game, but I have a scheme to get them all painted before he visits again. Mind you Covid is meaning that I’ve got plenty of time to work on that!

Good to know its a decent game, my brother has it and was talking about playing it next time I can go around (whenever that might be) I was thinking of scratch building a Rogue Trade for it.

That’s an excellent idea – I always really like the idea of people turning up for these games with personalised versions of the character they’re going to play.

That is great- looks a lovely model too.
Cheers,
Pete.

Thank you – the models from the Blackstone Fortress set were particularly good in my book, I’ve got high hopes that Cursed City will keep that up.

Aradia is another triumph! Lovely work. Maybe I should start to listen to metal rather than the weird ambient stuff that usually powers my painting…
February 17th, 2021 at 10:14 pm
Thank you! I find I listen to different things depending on what mood I’m in and how much time I’ve got. If I’m settling in for an afternoon painting I might stick on something chilled out, or listen to an audiobook. If I’ve got half an hour before I need to be somewhere else and I really want to get something finished then a thrash band really going for it does the business nicely!
February 18th, 2021 at 6:25 pm
I’m a bit behind on things at the moment, but that is a very nice mini indeed! 🙂
February 21st, 2021 at 8:59 am
Thank you! I’m a bit behind on answering comments but I’ll let myself off on that because I’m frantically painting before the end of the month! 🙂

Aradia came out really well! I like the color choices and gold is a great tone that catches your eye. I truthfully had forgotten (or maybe even never seen this sculpt before) and I like it quite a bit. She looks imperial but also strange enough to be a psyker. The group pictures also look great and you should have a really nice looking set of minis for Blackstone Fortress when they’re all finished!
February 21st, 2021 at 9:33 am
Cheers! I wanted to capture the idea that as a psyker she’s a)an important person (hence the regal colours) but also b)strange and distrusted. I think I got the balance about right. Looking at the pictures of Cursed City yesterday I’m going to have to crack on with Blackstone Fortress, otherwise I’ll get distracted by the new game and never get the old one finished!

That’s the truth, mate. GW is not kind enough to give us much breathing room between releases either unfortunately! Fortunately, there are plenty of good BSF sculpts you can potentially work on 🙂

Nicely done man. Really like the gem bits in the headdress and the flesh tones on the face. That red-purple is a real nice color, and I think it’s what I might try out on the Imperial Nobility when I get around to them.
March 30th, 2021 at 5:55 am
Thank you! She was a really nice model to work on, lots of interesting elements and different textures. Hadn’t thought of using this scheme for the Imperial Nobles team but you know what, I’m thinking about it now! 😀

Cool, will be interesting to see how you get on with those. I ordered another sprue, and some misc pieces, so I have everything I need to build them. But they are still pretty low on my list so far.
March 31st, 2021 at 6:06 am
Same really, I do want to crack on with them but right now there are so many projects I want to crack on with more! Isn’t that always the way though…
