Working on the servitor X-101 got me thinking about the sons of Holy Mars once again, and the fact that I haven’t painted anything for the glorious birthworld of the Mechanicum since back in April. Despite how much I know inside I love tech-priests and their ilk I still seem to have a bit of a mental block when it comes to actually painting them. Still, whilst I’ve got Blackstone Fortress on the brain I can always kill two (servo-)birds with one (radioactive!) stone and paint Daedalosus, the wandering tech-adept who can be taken as part of the band of adventurers venturing into the fortress.
I know I’ve slowed down a bit on getting Blackstone Fortress painted since I completed the original boxset, although this last week has done a little bit towards setting that right. We’ve got out of the habit of playing it since we discovered Warcry – although I paint plenty of other things that never see a gaming table so I don’t really see why that should make any difference. Still I would like to get the finger out and get everything else painted for it (especially once the wintery weather puts me off from being outdoors more than I strictly need to!). I’m still in two minds about buying the final expansion, Ascension. On the one hand the new Guardian Drones look amazing, we’ve enjoyed the game and it makes sense to complete the collection and finish the adventure. On the other hand the price feels a little bit like they’re taking the piss – safe in the knowledge that lots of people have been hooked by previous expansions Games Workshop are charging a bit more than I, without the box open in front of me to take a proper look at its contents, feels it really deserves. I may yet save up for it but it’s not the only thing GW are trying to tempt me into buying right now. I’ll think about it…

Figures look great mate, no surprises there. As for the expansion I haven’t got a clue what it looks like or contains but in the world of OCD (which of course should be CDO) it is important to have the set. Besides Christmas is coming too.

Thank you! Yeah too true, maybe I do owe myself an early christmas present 😉 Plus as you so rightly point out, it’ll probably always niggle at me that I didn’t complete the set (although it does still aggravate me that GW know this and are using it to ring a little more cash out of my poor, beleaguered wallet).

I like Mechanicus too though I think too many people paint them red and with the Mars bases. That’s no criticism of the guy you just painted either, he looks great! I think some blues would go nice with all the metal enhancements they have but I better be careful or I’ll have to put my money where my mouth is and paint some.
At the risk of sounding like a GW employee, I’d say get the expansion to be safe because I could see that particular one becoming hard to get later on. A lot of times it ends up being that the last thing released in a series is the one that nobody can get later on. Besides, it will feel good to have the complete set too 🙂

Thank you! See I must admit that in almost every other case I prefer to do my own thing rather than follow the studio paint scheme. The Ad Mech are the big exception for me though, it’s Mars all the way. I think it’s because for most of the time I’ve been a hobbyist the Mechanicum only existed in the artwork and I dreamed of having actual models that looked like that – probably if there had been no space marine models but plenty of artwork and fiction for all those years I’d now be painting Ultramarines. And yes, you’re spot on – we’ve enjoyed playing the game so far so it would suck to finish playing everything we have only to be stuck, unable to complete the story and not able to get our hands on the final expansion (or seeing it going for bazillions of pounds on ebay). Dammit Ge-Dubz, you do know how to part me from my cash though…

That is totally fair and something I would have never thought of as a very casual fan of Warhammer! I tend to make the challenge for myself to paint differently from however GW does it because I don’t want to try and copy what they do but make something that stands on its own but I think that is something people who are really into painting do, if you know what I mean. Its also more of a Warhammer thing because so many people are painting those minis that you want to have something a little unique too.
It is shameful to try and squeeze money out of people in that way but I think in this case, I think you’re making the right call by shelling out for it. I hope you enjoy those giant robots when you get them 😀

Brilliant mate – you really need to get over this admech block, because you do them so well!! 🤘

Thank you 🙂 And yes I really do need to get over that block, if for no other reason than that’s a heap of Skitarii waiting under the desk and they aren’t going to paint themselves!

Very nice- I’m looking into doing some Ad Mech now and this is the sort of thing I’m looking at for inspiration.
Cheers,
Pete.

Thank you 🙂 That’s cool, I’ll keep an eye out for it – always good to see more Ad Mech stuff (and frankly I need the inspiration myself!)
