Time to return to the very dankest depths of the Underhive today as we go in search of those most downtrodden of all Imperial residents – the foul and degenerate and/or unjustly maligned muties. As with the previous sets these were all based on the goblins from Games Workshop’s Lord of the Rings range, with the addition of various odds and ends from the bits box and a little bit of greenstuff. I didn’t go into any of these with a set plan, I just dug around in the leftover bits I had available and saw what I could come up with. Before we begin here’s a reminder, for anyone unfamiliar with the stock LotR goblins kit, what it was that I was working with.
And here’s the latest additions.
And here’s the three new recruits together.
With these three complete the mutie tribe is finally starting to look the way I want it to, a disparate clan of mismatched little monsters, individually weak but swarming from the shadows to prey upon the unwary (as usual just click on the picture to see a bigger version).
Needless to say this won’t be the last time we see these, I’ve still got a few more Goblin Town residents waiting for me to decide what to turn them into – and then there are a few more beasties that might well tie into this project nicely. Watch this space!

wow they look like a great Rock band ‘The Muties’ once again great paintwork, they do look good.

Haha, it does sound like the name of a band doesn’t it? I’d certainly listen to the Muties based on name alone. Mind you, these guys look more like the roadies than the band themselves 😉 Glad you like them!

Lovely 😁👍

Cheers dude! 😀

I’m impressed at how well you got those goblins to look they are part of the 40k universe, great stuff!
September 19th, 2020 at 10:50 am
Thank you! I think these models are great for 40k, they’re just so easy and fun to convert into mutants. Could do something similar for AoS or Mordheim as well I reckon. The one place where, to my eye, they don’t really fit, is Middle Earth. 🙂

Love these!!! So much fun to look at and I’m guessing to build as well. I must get some LotR goblins.
September 19th, 2020 at 11:02 am
Cheers! You must dude, you really must! For a while there they were cheap as chips on ebay too, not sure if they still are but worth a look. I’d love to see what you did with them, I reckon they’d fit your style of conversions and general grim/dark/twisted aesthetic perfectly. 🙂

Hmm might have to have a little look see on eBay later

Those are great. I think I’ll look out for some for myself… the underhive would welcome them as would any inquisimunda setting.
Cheers,
Pete.

Cheers! Yeah, they’d be great for Inq28 (or as the degenerate crew of a Death Guard vessel, pressed into service to decorate objectives in 40k…).
September 18th, 2020 at 7:37 pm
Great stuff. I reckon you had fun doing these. 😊
September 19th, 2020 at 11:06 am
Cheers! I had a whale of a time with these, very straightforward to convert and paint, so easy to make mistakes look deliberate, and very relaxed and pressure-free to work on in general.

These are great I love the shield
September 19th, 2020 at 11:07 am
Thank you! So did I! 🙂
September 19th, 2020 at 5:11 pm
They might want to swing by the clinic to get those scabs cleaned out. Tremendous work!
September 23rd, 2020 at 9:08 am
It’s pretty grim isn’t it! I don’t think they make a cream strong enough for these guys!
September 20th, 2020 at 1:50 am
This is a really clever use of these versatile little sculpts! I know some people didn’t like the way these were designed in the Hobbit movies but they work well as miniatures and I love how you added sci-fi bits to make them fit Necromunda. Seeing them altogether as a squad is really neat. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you expand this group further when you get around to it 🙂

Thank you! I must admit I was never too keen on the look of the hobbit goblins (I preferred the look of the Moria Goblins in LotR). Then again I did like the idea that somewhere as big and complex as Middle Earth would have lots of different kinds of goblin. As mutants though they’re just so versatile, I can see them fitting in with something like Mordheim or Warcry too, with fantasy style conversions instead of sci-fi ones. I keep looking at some of the other Middle Earth orcs/goblins as well now, definitely some possibilities there for other mutants too.
September 24th, 2020 at 1:33 am
Generally, I would prefer the Moria Goblins as well but the Hobbit Goblins ended up being a cool segment (except for maybe how easily and “comedically” the Goblin King died) in the Hobbit movies which weren’t as good as they might have been. Ooh, I look forward to seeing what your ideas might be. If they are anything like these, I bet they will be great!

You’ve really managed to scifi those up, great work!
September 23rd, 2020 at 10:43 am
Thank you! 🙂

Wow mate these are really good!!
September 21st, 2020 at 6:07 pm
Thanks very much! 😎
September 26th, 2020 at 1:51 am
I like what you’ve been doing with these, though there’s always the chance I may use mine in Middle-Earth so I’ll probably end up doing mine pretty much stock. Unlike the other posts I’ve commented on today, even though these look great there’s not too much chance of me digging these models out to paint anytime soon! 😀
September 27th, 2020 at 7:32 pm
Thanks 🙂 Weirdly, I never really got into the Middle Earth games (why? I love miniatures and I love Tolkien so why wouldn’t I love Tolkien miniatures? It’s a mystery!) I’m only recently taking a proper look at the range, there’s definitely some interesting stuff in there – even if I do end up only getting it so I can turn them into more mutants!
September 28th, 2020 at 12:07 am
Movie designs? Blobby monopose models in the forst waves of plastic? 28mm truescale specifically so they wouldn’t cross-pollinate easily with Warhammer models?
September 28th, 2020 at 8:01 am
All of the above basically. There are some decent models amongst the newer stuff though and even that hasn’t been enough to really engage my interest. Not that I need more projects really 😉
September 27th, 2020 at 2:17 am
Very imaginative
September 27th, 2020 at 11:10 am
Cheers! The nice thing about mutants is you can just let your imagination run wild 🙂
September 27th, 2020 at 1:03 pm
And yours is wild indeed!
