After adding some more Orcs to my Ironjaws collection my attention has now turned to their hungry sidekicks the Ogres. I’ve always rather liked the Ogres, a mate of mine had an Ogre army many years ago for WHFB and I’ve always liked the look of the hulking great bruisers. However I’ve never done anything about it – until now that is.
Rather than bite off more than I can chew I decided to start my foray into all things Ogre with a manageable Warcry warband, which I intend to hammer through in short order. I’ve cooked up a list of; two gluttons, one crusher, one leadbelcher and two gnoblars. I’ve already painted up the two gluttons (or bulls as they used to be called back in the day) and I’d like if I can to knock out the rest within a week or so, rather than getting overly bogged down. Being mostly large areas of flabby muscle these aren’t too tricky to paint so without wanting to rush I reckon I can turn them around quite quickly rather than ending up with another unfinished project sitting on the desk.
Nothing too crazy in terms of conversions here, I gave one of them a head from the mournfang riders set and the other a big metal jaw (from the orks) to help him chew through the toughest bones and armour. With these two done I’ll be moving on to the Crusher – the unit champion and leader of the warband. Then I’ll be on the home stretch with the leadbelcher and his two assistants/meals.

Nice mate. I like the iron jaw. Iโve always liked Brutes too and usually like to add one or two to an army or warband.

Yeah man, you’ve got to have a few big, stupid thugs around. And in the case of this warband, pretty much nothing else! ๐

I think when I used to play paintball I was the big stupid thug haha

Story of my life mate ๐

Oh these are rather cool, not seen these before which for me I guess is not surprising. Lovely work on the flesh tones and a simple but very neat and effective bit of base work sets them off perfectly. Will look forward to seeing more of these guys. ๐

They’re nice models aren’t they? There’s something oddly charming about them. They’re amongst the older stuff in GW’s current catalogue, they date from a time when their plastic models were pretty rough (and actually their metal miniatures from that time often weren’t anything to write home about either now I think back) but these ones have stood the test of time nicely. I’m working on the rest of the gang at the moment so all being well there should be some more along soon!

Aw, these wee chubbers are cracking mate – bless โem, they look Hank Marvin!

Glad you like them dude! I reckon the eternal mystery of who it was that ate all the pies (not to mention the burgers and the fries) has been solved!

Nice- I like an ogre, muscled but not ripped, fat but still threatening….
Cheers,
Pete.
September 8th, 2020 at 6:20 am
Thanks Pete ๐ They’re not ripped like an orc, nor are they as openly evil and out to destroy everything as Chaos, but they still look like nasty individuals and strong enough to do some damage with it, which in the OTT world of Warhammer is strangely refreshing.

wow they look mean, great painting too..
September 8th, 2020 at 6:21 am
Thank you! They have such expressive faces don’t they, makes them look like a right nasty pair. ๐

I love the old Ogre sculpts! I painted quite a few back in the day and do not have them any longer. One of these days I should buy a box and paint one up for old times. If only some of the classic sculpts like Greasus Goldtooth were still around! I also keep thinking about tackling one of the huge winter-themed ones (the name of them is escaping me right now) but am always scared by the amount of work it would take for something I’d never game with.
Regardless of that, I love how these look and I will be excited to see some more when you get them painted ๐

Oh some of those old Ogres were fantastic, Greasus especially was an amazing miniature – it’s a real shame he’s away now. For the winter themed ones are you thinking of the stonehorn/thundertusk? I bought one a few years ago in a moment of panic when I thought the ogres were going to be done away with after the switch to AoS. I actually planned to use it for a dwarf conversion but I could never get it looking the way I wanted (basically the idea was a bunch of dwarves riding in a howdah on the back of an armoured mammoth). I’m thinking that once it’s winter and I’m indoors more that might be a project to tackle, I could build it as the designers intended , paint up the rest of the ogres from the Feast of Bones set and have the beginning of a little AoS Ogres army. Not that they’re likely to see any use in games apart from Warcry but it’d look cool and that’s all that matters to me. ๐ Would definitely like to see you tackle an Ogre at some point, you’d do an amazing job of it.

I missed Greasus when he came up on MTO. I think I didn’t have enough money to swing it but man, I wouldn’t pass him up a second time. He is just an all-time favorite for me.
I was indeed thinking of the Stonehorn/Thundertusk! I love those minis and the size of it just looks insane. Its something I’d like to have in a display cabinet that I don’t own/have room for just yet. I should really just buy the darn thing and stash it away for a rainy day. I love your idea/plans for more ogres and I will look forward to seeing it here on your site in the future ๐

Well, the wait is over – there’s another ogre lumbered off the painting desk right… now!
Yeah, you need to get yourself a display cabinet, the quality of your work deserves to be shown off ๐
I feel the same way about Throgg the Troll King, I just couldn’t find the money for him when he was up on MTO (and he was really pricey at the best of times) but damn he was a cool model. If GW every fancied making an army of Chaos Trolls for AoS I’d be all in favour.
September 9th, 2020 at 10:58 pm
I look forward to checking it out and I’ll tell my fiancee that I HAVE to get a display cabinet and we’ll see what she says about that ๐
Throgg is another great sculpt I’d love to own. GW really is torturing us with some of these MTOs… I’d like a Chaos Troll army too. That sounds like fun to paint and to use on the tabletop!

Nice job on the Ogres. Funny enough, Iโll have one to show soon as well.
I painted one of those models back in the day, and found it difficult to get the flesh looking decent. The large flat areas and deep grooves made it challenging for a novice painter. Shows what one can do, when you got some skills!
Also, with those models conversions are pretty limited. But they do have their charm and that what made me keep mine around for a good long time.
September 16th, 2020 at 8:09 pm
Thank you! Yeah, I know what you mean about those large flat areas of flesh, even now I struggled with them a bit. I think, especially when I was more of a novice, I leaned heavily on painting all the details and relying on that to make the final result look good. Given that they have naff all in the way of details that would definitely have been a struggle for me before. It took me a long time to learn that less can be more, and making heavy weather of painting something doesn’t automatically make the end result better.

They turned out great. Itโs funny, I just compared our pics and yours really blew mine out of the water. I didnโt spend as much time, so it is what it is. But I really like how the flesh on your Ogres came out. Kudos! ๐
September 18th, 2020 at 7:30 am
Well thank you again! ๐ Don’t be harsh on yourself though, I was just checking out your ogre and he looks really good. Like you were just saying in a different thread it can be tricky keeping up with all the good stuff other bloggers keep producing but I’m looking forward to sitting down and giving it a proper read in a bit.
September 26th, 2020 at 2:45 am
That orky jaw works really well. You know, I’d never thought of doing that but I’m going to add it to the long list of your ideas I’ll be stealing…

Cheers! Just one of those things that came from messing around in the bits box looking for something to personalise the big lads with ๐
