Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun – Part 1

I’ve been inclined to poke around the odd graveyard lately, turning over the carcasses and looking for snacks. Unsurprisingly that’s got me looking at the Grymwatch set of models, which I picked up as part of a scheme to put together a ghoulish Warcry warband (much in the same vein as I used Ironskullz boys – also from Warhammer Underwear – to make an Orc warband). Some readers may recall that I used one of them to create a nasty-looking jester back in November of last year.

Now he’s joined by a few more cannibals, starting with this hook-handed gentleman.

Alongside him we have the first lady-ghoul that I can remember seeing from GW. This is probably my favourite model in the warband, in fact she’s pretty much worth the price by herself, and she proved to be great fun to paint as well.

Thirdly we have a pair of unfortunate, mistreated bats. Bats get a bit of a rough press at times, which is unfortunate as they’re really quite brilliant little creatures, which do no harm to anyone, yet which are branded with all kinds of silly supposititious nonsense by people who really ought to know better. Remember, the same people who flap and scream that bats are poisonous and out to get them are also allowed to drive cars, have children and vote.

It’s also not a good idea to eat them, as this is likely to be a source of infections crossing from wild animals to humans, something which could potentially lead to a global pandemic and massive loss of life, as well as social and economic devastation. Thankfully people listen to experts rather than just making things up as they go along and as a result has remained a purely hypothetical scenario – global pandemics being very much a thing of the past now and unlikely to occur in any of our lifetimes…

Anyway, there are some bats in the grymwatch set (because obviously if you’re not scared by the corpse-eating cannibals then some nocturnal insectivorous mammals should be enough to give you the heeby-geebies) and I thought they’d make a nice thematic stand in to replace a fury in Flesh-Eater Courts Warcry warband.

The poor bats don’t seem to be having a terribly good time of things, for one thing they’ve been chained together, and chained to a headless corpse, with the chains looped through the delicate membranes of their wings which seems rather convoluted and cruel. Then again the Flesh-Eater Courts are already quixotic cannibals who tilt at innocent civilians rather than windmills so why not torment innocent bats as well? Either way they were quite fun to paint and between them these three models have me thinking about my ghoulish warband again so I might tackle some more soon. Maybe one of the big monsters, or perhaps some more ghouls? (Grym)watch this space! (I’ll get my coat…).

All very nice and creepy indeed. Fantastic job on the lady goul. Reminds me of one of my old girlfriends but prettier. Can’t ever imagine people eating bats though, nobody is that stupid!

  • Alex

Brilliant mate, they look superb (as always). You won’t believe this, but I have need of a lady-ghoul mini & didn’t know that one even existed! Problem solved πŸ™‚

  • Mikko

These look excellent! Also, I found Warhammer Underwear amazingly funny for some reason πŸ˜€

  • patmcf

Totally agree with Dave in regards to people eating bats when there are perfectly good Pangolins hanging in the larder!
I do so love these new ones mate ,and I can see why she is the favourite! well painted againNNNN!

  • Azazel

A lovely-horrible set of models here. And well done on getting so many Warhammer Underpants done as well! Do Flesh-Eaters have a set of cards for War Cry yet?

    • Wudugast

Cheers! πŸ™‚ Yes, they have their cards, they were some of the first I think. They’re sold out here now but you can find them in the back of the 2019 Tome of Champions (or by clicking on this link… https://ageofminiatures.com/warcry-warbands/). Every faction currently in AoS has Warcry rules (Lumineth and Fyreslayers had them in White Dwarf – all the others had cards) apart from Cities of Sigmar. I’d quite like it if Cities of Sigmar got rules as well, I’d put together an old-school adventuring warband (men, elves and dwarves – something from every archetype). In some ways I don’t really think all the non-Chaos factions belong in the Bloodwind Spoil but in other ways I don’t see why any games we play need to necessarily be set there either, so it’s all good.

Looking great, and once again you’ve come up with the perfect series title!

  • Pete S/ SP

Those are great- the female ghoul is great but the twin hook guy looks really nasty.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  • imperialrebelork

Aww the bats are cute hehe. The Ghoul-Lady is very cool indeed. Love the bedraggled hair on her.

  • maenoferren22

Awesome work there.I really like the colours chosen

  • Subedai

Nice, being amongst the ghouls myself again at the moment, I appreciate them even more. When it comes to female ghouls, you can’t beat these sculpts by “Ghoul King” Paul Muller though, available from Bad Squiddo Games: https://badsquiddogames.com/shop#!/Ghoul-Mothers-2/p/111835982/category=20887901

    • Wudugast

Cheers! I’ve been enjoying seeing your ghoul kings getting some attention again, I’ve not been finding a lot of time for commenting on other people’s blogs lately but I’ve been admiring from afar πŸ™‚

Oof – those ghoul ladies are pretty grim! Bad Squiddo have some great stuff, I’ll need to get an order in at some point soon.

      • Subedai

Thank you, and don’t worry – I don’t comment regularly myself, usually by the time I get to catch up on blogs, my feelings have already been expressed by others, and more eloquently so!

Bad Squiddo Annie mentioned that she might get these Ghoul Mothers re-sculpted at some point as they are a bit too gruesome for many customers, so if you want these particular ones, it might be better not to wait too long as they could be discontinued in their current form.

      • Wudugast

Cheers for the tip – might be worth me putting in an order soon then πŸ™‚

These are some awesome minis for Flesh Eaters Court. They are one of the most interesting armies in AoS though I think they could use a couple more cool models to make the range more enticing. Perhaps GW should tap you to design them because each one of these are just amazing πŸ™‚

    • Wudugast

Ah, you’re too kind mate πŸ™‚ I agree though, the models are cool and the background is great, but they could use a few more models to bulk them out a bit. I’d love to see them play up the idea of them as knights, it’s central to the background but it doesn’t come across in the models at all (understandably given that most of them were originally designed as ghouls for WHFB). It’d be cool to see them really play that up, with mounted knights (just think of the horrible stitched together beasts they’d be riding – all the while convinced that they were noble chevaliers on beautiful horses), men at arms, and so on. In fact now I think about it they could just raid the old Bretonnian range for concepts and recreate them as ghouls (which would only add insult to injury for the poor Bretonnian fans but would give us some very cool stuff nonetheless). Imagine a ghoulish grail reliquae or high king!

Anyway, I really must get back to this project, my hands are full with work at the moment (and when I do have any hobby time it’s all going into the Chaos Knight) but I’ve got a few more ghouls lurking around the desk to tackle when time allows.

      • Kuribo

Yeah, I feel like GW missed a trick there by coming up with this great background idea but then not really doing anything with it model-wise. I thought a couple of years ago that somebody should do a diorama where the ghoul (or whoever from Flesh Eaters Court) is doing something typically ghoul-like like digging up a grave or backstabbing someone and then on the other side of the wall would depict what they think they look like while doing it. Using Bretonnians or something like that would work perfectly for that dynamic since they think they’re actually heroic. I never got much further than the concept on that one but it is a good idea just waiting for someone to tackle it! πŸ™‚ I will look forward to seeing more ghouls as you have time too!

      • Wudugast

That diorama idea sounds very cool! I know what you mean about having too many ideas and not enough hours in the day, I end up hoping someone else runs with them and comes up with something great as well πŸ˜€

Speak, damn you!
