You may recall that during the summer of 2019 I chipped away at an Age of Sigmar skirmish warband dedicated to the Blood God Khorne. By the time I wrapped up the project I’d painted seven bloodreavers and if I’m honest I was never very comfortable leaving them there. The holy number of Khorne is eight and so leaving the squad on just seven members seemed like foolishness and guaranteed to bring down the ire of the war god upon my luckless head. However painting one bloodreaver seemed equally daft when I could paint three and round out a squad of ten.
Here’s the three new boys ready to start rampaging with their new mates.
And here’s the whole squad ready to reap skulls for their god’s famously uncomfortable chair.
Once again I’m not sure when I’m going to get back to this project but I do have more ideas, it’s really just a matter of time…

“Conan, what’s worst in life?”
“Probably those guys to be honest.”
That’s a great band, they look vicious.

Ha! Aye, too true š
Cheers!

Brilliant mate – I think I’m probably repeating myself, but it is so good to see these guys done in not-red!! Puts a really different vibe on them, and looks ‘bloody’ fantastic imo.

Thank you! Yeah, I really enjoy coming up with schemes that differ from the GW studio version but still work, or that riff off them but go their own way. I don’t have anything against red Khorne per se but it generally looks less real to me, I like something that’s a little more gritty. It’s the same with the World Eaters, I always wonder when they found the time to stop killing people and get their armour repainted from pre-Heresy blue and white into their post heresy scheme. Then again I often wonder with the World Eaters when exactly they find the time to stop killing people and do pretty much anything…

š Good point!

I like that champion! I reckon it’s a good use of the old mutation sprue, suitably Khornate.
May 8th, 2020 at 10:23 pm
Thank you! It wasn’t something I planned, I’d just lost his original arm (it’s either in a box somewhere or I used it in a conversion at some point and have forgotten). Either way I realised I needed something and that one just fitted perfectly.
I do like the old chaos mutation sprue, it’d be nice if they did a new version someday, they could really do some cool stuff with it now. Not that we don’t have plenty of cool mutant bits from existing sprues but we could always use more!

More great work and I love the flesh on these guys. I think you have taken to social distancing and self isolation extremely well by putting your time to good use. š
May 8th, 2020 at 10:27 pm
Thank you! Yeah, I may be stuck inside but at least I can do something I enjoy, there’s no need for anyone to sit around bored.
Honestly I think I was born to self isolate. It’s having to go out and deal with people where I start to struggle š I think after a while it’ll get to me, but so far I’ve found it’s not so bad (and in fact I find I’m speaking to friends and family more now by text, phone, email etc, we have time to catch up with each other that we didn’t when we were all out working all the time, which says something for how we were living our lives before Covid I reckon. Who wants to look back on their life and only be able to say “I was productive and the shareholders did quite well out of it!”?) Anyway, it’s been good just getting some down time to relax at home, something else that happens all too rarely I now realise, and luckily my job still has me out and about some of the time (by myself of course!) otherwise I really would be climbing the walls!

There is an upside to most things if you look for them and you have certainly identified several applicable to yourself. Personally I’ve yet to meet someone during my life to date that said “I wish I had spent more time at work”. Balance and compromise are key in this life I have found and I will be interested to see how people react after Covid to the idea of going back to long hours. Some will embrace it while others will prefer to continue working from home. I was lucky to retire at 49 and have plenty to occupy myself. I loved my job but I love some things more.

Great work- love the mutant hand.
Cheers,
Pete.

Cheers! I thought it suited him nicely. Give that man a big hand and all that! š

Lovely work mate. I especially like the scarring. I also like your logic on how many to paint. However Iād argue that 11 is MY favourite and lucky number so, really, you should appease me and paint another one. Then again I think, as youāre done (sort of) with the Ork horde it might be time to start another horde. A horde of these nasty chaps would look very cool indeed sir.
May 8th, 2020 at 10:38 am
Cheers dude! Well, tell you what… just ‘cos it’s you and you asked so nicely… I am actually planning to do an 11th one. I’ve been thinking that the stuff I’ve already painted would make a good start to another Warcry warband (I’ve got pretty much everything I need for one in the Khorne warband I’ve put together so why not right?). However in the interests of variety I though having a Bloodreaver with a big axe would be cool so I’ve got him built. They’ve got different rules to the Bloodreavers with two axes and although I’m by no means a rules guy, having a bit of diversity in a gang or warband is bound to be more interesting right? Plus, far more importantly, he looks badass!
I do like the idea of having a mighty horde of them though – maybe someday…
May 8th, 2020 at 11:26 am
Haha good man. Big axes rock
May 6th, 2020 at 11:27 pm
These are awesome, mate. What kits did the parts come from? Iām thinking of possible 40k cultist proxies…
May 7th, 2020 at 7:08 am
Never mind, I posted when half asleep!
May 8th, 2020 at 10:11 am
No worries, you’re in good company – I do most things half asleep š
Funnily enough I did get them originally to proxy into Khorne cultists for 40k but the idea never really got off the ground. I reckon it could still work though, especially mixed with Corpse Grinders and various other 40k odds and ends. In fact I’ve just discovered that I’ve got a couple of spares left over so I might do something like that with them just for fun.

I would love to have these in my armies if I played any GW! Really brilliant painting, so fun to see. Thanks for sharing such nice work.

Thank you very much! š

Very cool and nice use of the old (bad) mutation sprue as well! š
July 1st, 2020 at 8:37 pm
Thank you! Aye, that old mutation sprue was a bit ropey wasn’t it? Mind you, I have a scheme to use everything on it somewhere and make it work (god knows what I’ll do with that massive gnarly arm but I’ll think of something).

haha!
