Blackstone Fortress: Traitor Guard – Part 2

The march of the traitor guard continues apace. I’ve almost completed all the baddies from the Blackstone Fortress box (not including the expansions) so my current focus is rounding out the final squad of traitor guard. The box contains two duplicate sets of guardsmen but as far as possible I’ve tried to make each one unique, rather than have too many sets of identical twins. These aren’t the easiest models to convert however so in a lot of cases the paintjob ended up taking the strain. When I’ve finished the squad I’ll try to show all the pairs so you can compare and decide for yourself how well I’ve managed. In the meantime here’s the first four members of the second squad.

Only three more to go and the core of the Blackstone Fortress project will be done – all being well I’d like to get them finished before Christmas.

Looking good! I’m really digging those pelts. I think the reds could use some highlights though. They’re very striking, no doubt, but especially the big cloth pieces on the last guy look a bit flat compared to the rest of the colors.

Thank you! I’m pleased with the way the pelts turned out, contrast paint does most of the legwork there. Being a bit thinner but high in pigment means it works well for creating those kind of patterns on the textured fur.

As for the red I’m going to lay the blame entirely with the low winter sun we have at the moment. Either it’s blazing in through the window and swamping the lamps altogether, or it’s dark outside and the ambient light in the room struggles to balance the harsh light of the lamps. In real life the red is if anything a little starkly highlighted, but getting the balance right in the photos was an exercise in frustration! Just one of the joys of living so far north I guess ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very cool – I really do like that these minis aren’t too OTT, and that gives them a nice understated degree of barbarism that could easily be loyalist or chaotic. It’s actually refreshing to see GW being a bit restrained for once! Your subtle uniformity in the painting really emphasises this, and is lovely ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Wudugast

Thanks very much mate! ๐Ÿ˜€ Yeah, subtlety isn’t usually a word in GW’s lexicon is it, but I think they nailed it here. Snip those spikes off and you’re most of the way to having a loyal regiment raised from a feudal or semi-feral world.

Very nice mate. The red pops. I found them a bit tricky to convert too but even minor adjustments can make a big difference I found. I really like the striped fur and wish Iโ€™d thought of that now.

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Yeah, minor tweaks go a long way with these – which is good because the choice is really between minor tweaks and major overhauls, there’s not a lot of middle ground. Much of what makes them excellent miniatures also makes them tricky to convert, although I reckon I’ve managed enough to individualise them at least.

Those are really nice- not too tied to anyone faction in terms of colour choice either.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    • Wudugast

Thank you! Yeah, I wanted to keep it fairly open ended with the colour-scheme, I don’t think they’re worshippers of any one god but this way they should fit in with any of them.

Nicely done and a little different for you of late. Every chance you will get them done before Christmas just as long as you leave the wrapping presents to the better half! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Yeah, there’s been a lot of gribbly creatures and/or big green orks lately so it was a nice change to tackle some (relatively!) normal humans. Definitely aiming to get the rest done by Christmas if I can (and I’ll certainly let my partner wrap as many presents as she wants – I’d undoubtedly make an arse of it. Do I pretend to be bad at it to get out of doing it, or do I pretend that I’m only pretending to be bad at it to cover up the fact that I actually am bad at it? The jury is still out!)

Nice work – especially the pelts. A good game to play over Christmas too ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Wudugast

Cheers! I’m really pleased with the pelts, makes me wonder what kind of big, stripy beast they came from. Definitely a good game for over Christmas (and dark winter nights in general!) ๐Ÿ˜€

I came to check out the pelts, and stayed for the rest of the minis! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Contrast paints did 90% of the work on the pelts, I’m not completely sold on them as a painting tool (or maybe they’re just not entirely for me) but they’re an absolute gift for pelts and furs. Glad to see you’re still about mate and hope all is well with you ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Wudugast. Definitely still around! Was working on the arcade machine, then moving house, and now slowly getting back into painting. Hopefully will have some to share this year. Always enjoy seeing your stuff!
