Blackstone Fortress: Traitor Guard – Part 1

Having painted up most of the baddies from the Blackstone Fortress, and enough of the heroes for a crew of adventurers, my attention has turned to the traitor guardsmen who make up a large part of the Chaos forces in the game. Until now we’ve been reliant on raiding my existing collection of traitor guard to represent these turncoats but the models from the Blackstone Fortress set really are impressive and I’ve been looking forward to getting to work on them properly. Each squad contains seven guardsmen and, with three already painted and shown previously, I decided to start by tackling four more to round out the first group.

First up, two guardsmen armed with the ubiquitous lasgun.

Of course, when you really need to show that you mean business, and the dark gods are watching but need some light to see by, you can’t go wrong with a flamer.

Lastly we have the squad’s champion, this sergeant who has embraced his new creed with dark fervour.

And there we have it, a whole squad ready for action and another step closer to getting the original Blackstone Fortress boxset completed.

Working on these I’m struck, once again, by the degree to which they outshine the old loyalist Cadians. Looking at them, and the gorgeous new Sisters of Battle range, we can only hope that some new regiments will be emerging to fight in the Emperor’s name in the near-ish future. Of course, I’m also still hoping for a full lost-and-the-damned/traitor guard range at some stage too.

These are great! I love the crisp, clean paint work. Agreed with how the make other Imperial models look inferior in comparison – now I have to paint mine!

Thank you! Aye, the old Imperial Guard models especially look a bit ropy now – not awful but they could be better, especially when you compare them to these traitor guard or some of the newer Imperial stuff (Ad Mech, Primaris Marines, the new Sisters of Battle etc). I reckon a new plastic regiment or two is well overdue (especially as, when they do arrive, I’ll just chop them up, cover them in spikes and turn them into traitor guard anyway!). Good luck painting your traitors 🙂

Excellent stuff mate – lovely scheme across the group… uniform, but not too uniform, as befits their origins & ‘journey’! It’s another fine line to walk mate, but (as usual) you’ve walked it majestically 🙂

    • Wudugast

Majestic you say? Think that may be the best compliment I’ve received all day 😀 Don’t worry, I won’t let it go to my head!
Yeah, there was a balance to be struck – exactly as you say I wanted them to look as though they’d started out in uniform but had been scavenging along the way so now everything is a little miss-matched.

So true! When the dark gods are watching there IS nothing like a flamer, though I do think a nice variation, and from the feedback I’ve gotten is also much appreciated is purposeful overkill in the name of the dark gods, e.g. shooting a guardsman with a multi-melta, a grot with a battle cannon (extra points for pre-allocating all of the fire from a leeman russ onto said grot), and so on. I’m not sure where I learned this truth, but I think it was from watching Kurt Russell movies, who all adherents of the dark egregore know was definitely a secret adept of the true way.

Anyway, great little squad you have there. You did Blackstone proud!

These are sublime. GW need to combine the traitor guard and cultists into a proper, fully-fledged box. Love the gritty feel to them.

    • Wudugast

Wow, thank you very much – that’s high praise indeed!
Yeah, I’m with you on the cultist kit. All the cultists/traitor-guard etc that we’ve seen recently, especially all the Blackstone Fortress stuff, has been excellent, but turning them into a full army with various multi-part plastic kits would be a dream come true for me.

Those are great- dark and brooding without obviously belonging to any particular chaos god.

    • Wudugast

Thanks, that’s very much what I was going for. It’s nice to tie models to particular gods but some of the time you just want a good old-fashioned generalist traitor scumbo!

They really are fantastic sculpts, and I very much hope they’re a sign of things to come for IG-level Models. You’ve more than done them justice here! I particularly like Knifey McStabberson out of this lot.

    • Wudugast

Thank you very much! Yeah, Knifey-McStabberson (Stabby McStabface?) is a great model – I didn’t really “get” it until I’d built it but now it’s one of my favourites from the squad.

More great work on some excellent figures. Love the colour scheme and the use of a little red to make things pop.

    • Wudugast

Cheers mate! Yeah those little patches of red is really working well here (if I may humbly say so myself!). I wasn’t sure it would work to begin with but it’s paying off now 🙂

Well done mate they look great !

Speak, damn you!
