Blackstone Fortress: Beastmen

With the Negavolt Cultists out of the way the next step for my Blackstone Fortress project was to turn my attention to the fearsome beastmen. In Games Workshop’s fantasy universes, beastmen are uniformly savage and chaotic – indeed the name “beast man” derives from “best man” and refers to their hedonistic, untamed nature combined with their tendency to consume alcohol in quantity and instigateย shenanigans. In the 41st Millennium beastmen enjoy a greater range of personalities and many are loyal to the Imperium, serving in Imperial Guard regiments and even appearing as one of Necromunda’s most famous faces. Despite this they are generally abused, looked down upon and used as cannon fodder with the result that many choose to throw in their lot with the servants of the Ruinous Powers, who also tend to abuse them, look down upon them and use them as cannon fodder. The models from Blackstone Fortress, it should be noted, fall firmly into the latter camp.

Being crude and hairy myself I’ve always had a soft spot for these rowdy creatures and often planned, usually without much actual progress, to model some of my own during the long years in which they vanished from 40k almost entirely. Thus finding them in the Blackstone Fortress set was a real thrill and I’ve been looking forward to tackling them ever since.

It took me a while to get the colours right on these but I’m definitely pleased with the outcome. What more they’ve left me so enthused about all things bestial that I’ve already started working on some more, this time destined to rampage around the Mortal Realms instead.ย  All being well I’ll have them ready to show you all soon.

    Nice work, got my 2 chaos marines finished so the beastmen are next on the list before finally tackling the big bad himself!

      Well done! For me its rogue psykers next, then Mallex himself. Then I’ll double-back and get the rest of the traitor guard painted up, and add some more heroes.

    Smooth painting, they look great! Would be fun to see other kinds of beastmen in addition to the goaty ones – where are the lizards, bears, cats and the like?

      I completely agree – and what about Chaos-aligned beastmen specific to each of the gods? Right now we’ve only got Tzaangors and “normal”-gors. You can convert some really nice looking pestigors from a mix of gors and plaguebearers, and I’ve got some kitbashed bloodgors on the painting desk as we speak, but a greater range of kits for them would be nice. Anyway, glad you like them! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hell yeah! I was similarly stoked to see the return of Beastmen to 40K, and you’ve done a great job with them here.

    Also seconding Mikko that I’d love to see GW expand beyond bovine Beastmen. I know back in the day there were some for Fantasy that were hybrids with bears and such, and even at least one Slaaneshi Unicorn-man.

      I’ve always pictured a carnival of weird creatures following a Chaos warband around and it would be nice to see them dig into that further. There’s so many possibilities they could explore with beastmen and although I imagine there might be a fear on GW’s that they wouldn’t be the most popular models, just like daemons they could fit in just as well in AoS as 40k which would broaden their appeal. Plus, as Warcry has demonstrated, when their crazy ideas are well executed people will be drawn to it regardless of how “out there” it seems.

        Yep. Def need more Slaangors and Khornegors and Pestigors. Also, while we’re at it, how about some Beast-women? Or do they really want to go back to something like the Runequest Broo backstory that their Beastmen line originated in?

        Now you’re talking! To me the beastmen are a chance to really demonstrate the “chaotic element” of a faction, a chance to do something really outside the box, rather than just sticking to the same safe, well-worn concepts. I remember when the Maggotkin were released and it struck me that the Lord of Blights is basically just a remake of the old Nurgle Lord, and what a pity it was that they hadn’t taken the opportunity to make something a bit more “out there”. GW designers, if you’re reading this, next time you’re working on a chaos character (not daemonic or a space marine of course) make it a beastwoman instead, and create something that’s instantly memorable and striking.

        As for the Runequest backstory – dare I even ask? I vaguely recalled that the Beastmen came from Runequest originally but what was the origin story they went with? I was fuming when Orks first started springing up from spores but I grew to really like the idea – my tolerance for silly reproduction stories that allow us to avoid the idea of women existing among the unattractive species isn’t inexhaustible though! :-p

        It’s really fucked up. I’ve had this tab sitting open for a while, and I just can’t bring myself to type it out. If you decide you do want to know, I’m sure there’s a Runequest Wiki or something that has the story.

        You are not wrong, that is entirely fucked up. Part of me wishes I’d paid more attention to your advice and not looked it up. Can’t imagine GW going with that nowadays though.

        Yeah, the Broo “lore” element is best left in the past. I get it that it’s got origins and influence from similar folk-tale myths, and I’m not super-PC or anything, but I don’t believe it’s needed in our games. Similar to (parts of) the Fimir origins, for that matter.

        Yeah, it actually got to the point (for me) when it felt like it was trying so hard to be shocking that it started to become a bit turgid and overdone. Less would have been more. It’s always been clear in the later background that the beastmen enjoy both sex and violence, often at the same time, but by leaving more of it to the imagination it has a greater impact. Just like good horror fiction, what the reader imagines based on implication generally has far more impact than what they are shown openly.

    I have just been to a gamming shop and have seen for myself the size of the figures you boys do and can appreciate the paint work that is required a lot more .I wont say what I bought there at the moment but it is right away from my normal stuff and if it works I’ll put it up, fingers crossed it works Ha Ha !

    Love the beatmans, Wudugast! I’m sorely tempted to find my own BSF stuff and clip these for some queue-jumping! Only 4 per box, right?

      Cheers! Go for it, I always find nothing works to get things painted better than enthusiasm for a project, so if that’s what has you tempted then follow that muse whilst she’s with you!
      Yup, only four in a box and by mixing the parts you end up with four unique models.
