Blackstone Fortress: Negavolt Cultists

Despite getting that Ogryn painted the other day I sense a real danger of my Blackstone Fortress project starting to stall so I’ve been reapplying myself to the task over the last few nights. As I can lay the blame for the slow down firmly at the feet of the Negavolt Cultists (a set of models which regular readers will know I’ve been grousing about for some time) I decided that the best way to get back on track was to face my fears and get them finished.

There’s actually a lot to love about them; they are unusual models, subtle and cleverly designed and our first sighting of the Dark Mechanicum in plastic – surely a boon to any servant of Chaos. However they are also a real challenge to paint, as though the whole model was made up of nothing but nooks and crannies into which one has to find a way to insert one’s brush (stop giggling at the back!). That, combined with their pale and sickly skin – never my forte – turned them into a bit of a headache and I kept finding excuses to put them off and paint other things instead. No more however! Our brave explorers shall face the depths of the fortress and when they do they shall find bondage clad luddites with optical dreadlocks waiting for them.

…And of course this allows me the minor thrill of crossing off the Negavolt Cultists from my, by now slightly battered, “to do” list.

Blackstone Fortress To Do List

Although there’s still quite a lot left to cover there we now have pretty much everything we need to play a game (assuming that we only use the same four heroes and that we recruit traitor guardsmen from the ranks I made previously for 40k). The biggest things missing from the basic game now (leaving aside the expansions) are the beastmen and the rogue psykers so that’s where my attention will be focused next.

Yeah, your Negasonic Teenage Warheads look pretty good. Not too shabby on the progress though the boxed set, either!

Cheers – I was pleased with myself for not allowing myself to get completely hacked off with them and still trying to do a good job. I quite like keeping lists like that as well, it’s very satisfying to cross things off as you go and it really helps to give a sense of when progress is being made (and when it isn’t).

Keep going! I’m having the same challenge and wanting to get my Blackstone Fortress models painted. I’m down to the 2 Chaos Marines, Obsidius Mallex and the 4 Beastmen from the original set. Then both expansions after that!

However I also decided to buy the 3D printed terrain for the game so will need to get that painted up too! Long way to go but making progress!

    • Wudugast

Well done, you’re almost there on the main box. I’ve started working on Mallex on and off and he’s a lot of fun to paint, I’ll try to get him done soon. I’ve seen pictures of those 3d printed tiles too, they do look very cool but I think they’d be one project too many at the moment (plus my poor wallet can only stand so much!)

3d printed terrain? Tell me more…

Very cool! And good job on pushing through to finish them. They’re pretty high on my list of “I really need to do the last bits and finish these” after I get done with all the damn Death Guard I need to get done in the next couple of weeks.

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Yeah, sometimes you’ve just got to knuckle down and get something painted, even if it is a bit awkward. Must admit I’m rather pleased with them now the dust has settled a bit. Good luck with those Death Guard – why the deadline? Just because Mortarion will brook no sluggards or do you have a big game coming up? Loved that Plague Angel by the way – very cool indeed.

Big event the weekend of the 16th-18th. Army Lists get locked in a couple of months beforehand, so I need to get the DG finished. It is, as usual, my own damn fault, since I’ve known roughly what I was planning to bring for over a year at this point.

        And thanks!

      • Wudugast

Yeah, I know that “leaving it to the last minute” feeling all too well – my university career in a nutshell! Good luck – you can do it!

Thanks! I’ve always had issues with procrastination. I still haven’t done anything about it, but I’m used to it now, and expect it.

I really like them- there is something quite purposeful about the way they carry their electric wand things….

    Cheers,

    Pete.

Cheers! Yeah, there’s a real sense of malevolence and focus to them isn’t there, you get the feeling that they’re marching off somewhere and they mean business. The lack of faces really helps too, it dehumanises them. It’s part of the reason why I didn’t try to individualise them at all either.

Despite the troubles they caused you’ve done very well with them. I am yet to build mine and will be converting them as I find the standard posing a little stagnant. However your painting brings them to life.

    • Wudugast

Cheers mate. Funnily enough I was entirely with you on the pose until I got them finished, now I think they look really purposeful and menacing. I’m not going to be arrogant enough to put it all down to my paintjob, the sculpts do the legwork. I hoped it would turn out that way whilst I was working on them, hence why I didn’t try to convert them at all (although in part that was also because I was getting pissed off and just wanted the damn things done), but I was pleased when it paid off.

Cracking paint job mate, but I must admit, I really struggle with these guys… that junk coming out of their heads is a real turn-off for me :-/

    • Wudugast

When I first saw it I think I thought it was quite clever but I must admit it made them a right nightmare to paint and it definitely looks odd. Could always snip them off I suppose, must have a nose around online and see if anyone’s done that and how it makes them look.

Fantastic work! Your recipe works so well on these! And there’s that excellent red cloth again 😉
