Blackstone Fortress: Ur-Ghuls

The first time we played Blackstone Fortress the Ur-Ghuls which leapt from the shadows to savage our brave heroes may not have been the unpainted horrors which represented some of the other inhabitants of the fortress, but were instead crypt ghouls – still square based and fresh from the graveyards of Sylvania. Although this was better than some of the proxies we came up with (grots acting as Spindle Drones?! Desperate measures indeed!) it still wasn’t the sort of thing I wanted to tolerate in the long term so, on the grounds that I thought they looked fairly quick and easy to paint, I boosted them up the queue for getting painted.

One thing I wasn’t keen on about them was the duplicate poses. If built as instructed you end up, not with four distinct individuals, but with two pairs of clones. I didn’t think there was any need to make radical changes but I did want to do something about this, adjusting one from each pair slightly so that the end result looked a little more organic. Here’s they are as they looked before they were painted. The original is on the right, the converted version on the left.

And here they are again, fully painted and ready to prowl the dark corridors of the fortress.

In order to add a little more diversity I tried to add some variety to their skin tones whilst still keeping them uniformly pale and ghastly.

Next up I’ll try to finish off Janus Draik so that we have a full set of adventurers with which to tackle the fortress, after which I’ll probably try to get the Negavolt Cultists painted. As models I really like them, and there really isn’t a suitable proxy in my collection, so they make a natural choice to prioritise but unfortunately they’re proving to be a real headache to paint so expect much swearing and gnashing of teeth before they’re done…

      Thank you! Yeah, I have a bit of an obsession with avoiding duplicate models, I’ll be trying to mix things up with the traitor guard too as soon as I get on to them.

    Great stuff. I strangely drawn to these models. They look kind of off beat and weird, and corny. I can’t put my finger on it.

      Yeah, they really come across as nicely alien to me – both in appearance and in “culture” (if you can use such a word here). To me they help to emphasise that there is a whole galaxy-worth of species out there, not just the handful of xenos who have model ranges. I know that most of the other aliens were supposedly destroyed in the Great Crusade but we’re always being told that, even at the height of the Crusade, there was more territory in the galaxy left unexplored than otherwise – there are still a lot of shadows for more things like this to lurk in.

    Nicely done mate – your subtle adjustments were worth the effort for sure, and the skin tone variation works perfectly!

      Thanks mate! 😀 Something I meant to mention in the post but forgot, was the possibility I played with in my head that the variation in skin tone is actually because of light rather than natural colour. By that I mean the colder coloured areas are lit only by the ambient light within the fortress, the warmer areas are caught in the beam of the explorer’s lamps. Or of course, maybe that’s just how their skin looks all the time – I could never quite decide 🙂

    Yeah, I had to mix mine up a bit as well, but I don’t think I managed to do as nice a job with the conversions as you did.

    I need to figure out where I put my Negavolt Cultists. They were almost done when I moved, but I’m not sure where they got to. They are stupidly fiddly to paint, and with no good way to do sub-assemblies, for sure.

      Just took a quick look at your Ur-Ghuls to remind myself and I think you did a very fine job on them. 🙂 A bit of variety goes a very long way here.

      Sooner or later I’m going to have to move house and I’m already dreading having to sort out and transport all my models (without losing anything). Good luck finding those cultists – they’re lovely models but a real headache to paint. If only GW would release a paintbrush that I could hold at right angles to reality…

        Some sort of brush that could snake around between all those tendrils on their heads would be a huge help!

    Looking good here mate. After seeing yours and Dave’s recently I got mine out to clean up and, erm.. lost their heads. I’m sure I’ll find them. But bloody annoying!
