Rat Race – May

It’s time once again to take a look at how I’ve been getting on with my Skaven army this month. As many readers will by now be aware I’ve set myself the goal of getting my long unpainted Skaven army completed and to keep the ball rolling I’ve challenged myself to add at least one model to the army every month until it’s done. Having gnawed my way through the unpainted pile to great effect already, I’ve added the target of getting everything I currently own finished off by the end of the year.

Just a couple of models this month as the sheer busyness of life and work has invaded here just as it has with every other hobby project. First up we have another rat ogre to join the hulking brutes already in the collection.  I’ve been hoping for some time that GW might get around to replacing the old rat ogre kit, truly one of the worst things to currently (dis)grace their catalogue, but as yet they’ve stubbornly stuck with them. The Island of Blood versions were far nicer, but sadly were limited to two sculpts, neither of them easy to convert. Difficult to convert perhaps, but not impossible. Armed with some spares from the Hellpit Abomination that I painted back in January I set about creating a unique rat ogre to add to the squad I’d previously built.

For comparison, here he is next to the model on which he’s based.

And here’s the whole squad so far. Next to their brothers from Island of Blood (themselves over a decade old now) the two to the left really do look awful – and when you remember that these are still current models it’s hard not to feel a little embarrassed on GW’s behalf. Never mind though, perhaps if I get everything painted GW will finally respond to my entreaties and get some new ones made. We can but hope…

Anyway, this is not all for this month because I was inspired once again by Azazel’s monthly challenges. This time it was Mechanismo May – time to paint anything of which at least a significant part is mechanical. I had various plans for this but life put paid to all of them, and those ambots and their ilk will need to wait a little longer to be painted. Somewhere along the way however Azazel mentioned that he would be working on a Skaven with a mechanical hand and immediately the little cogs began to turn in my brain – I too had a mechanical Skaven in need of being painted; the great inventor Ikit Claw.

I’m not entirely sure what I’ll paint next for this project but, with next month’s update bringing us to half way through the year (already?!) I’ll take the opportunity to look at what else needs to be painted and perhaps even come up with some kind of strategy – otherwise there’s always the risk I end up painting everything in December!

The rat with the claw looks particularly great!

Brilliant work mate – the converted RO is very well done, and the cybernetic Ikit is just lovely!

Great stuff mate but only what I have now come to expect. What I really like is the creativity and imagination. Not sure if that’s a good insight to your mind or not but in any event the results are excellent. 😊

Nice mate ,just had a peep at some of your earlier rats ,bloody great!

Great stuff- that giant claw looks very viscious.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

I don’t find the current Rat Ogres as awful as you do, but there’s no denying they’re one of the oldest and clunkiest GW kits still available. This guy makes a really nice addition to the stock IoB pair, looking quite different despite the relatively minor conversions.

Ikit Claw has always been one of the coolest Skaven, both in terms of Model and fluff. You’ve done him up wonderfully here!

Probably nobody finds the rat ogres as awful as I do, I’m starting to feel it’s my specialist subject! 😀 You’ve got me wondering now if there’s a kit I like less (not my normal train of thought, I prefer to focus on the kits I like most, but quite fun if you go at it with the right attitude). The zombies and plague monks come close but I really think the rat ogres win it.

Yeah, I do like that Ikit Claw model. For a long time I didn’t even know it was out, I still thought the previous version was the current one (although the new one must have been released quite a while ago – the one I got was still in metal). Needless to say I snapped him up as soon as I discovered my error!

Nice Man. The conversion works and I admire your persistence in chipping away at this army.

Awesome additions to the collection! As Alexis pointed out, it’s cool to see how much the Ogre changed with some minor conversion.

I’d really like to get the IoB Rat Ogre pair, just need to spot a good deal on them on eBay.. It’s such a shame that they never got released is standalone kits.

    • Wudugast

I know, as far as I recall they’re buried on the sprue – mixed up with clanrats and so on, so wouldn’t be easy to release separately, but if ever something was deserving of a standalone release it’s those two rat ogres. Worth keeping an eye on ebay though, they pop up there fairly often (it’s where I got this one and his – still WIP – pal).

As for converting them there’s not that many things you can do but I reckon there’s at least a few tweaks to get out of the kit, enough to tide me over until that long-dreamed of day that GW finally hears my prayers and sorts us out with a proper new multi-part kit!

  • Azazel

Very cool – I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this version of Ikit Claw before – is he resin or plastic?

    • Wudugast

Funnily enough I only realised he existed fairly recently as well. For a long time I thought the model from 4th edition was the only one they ever made. He’s resin and was released after the final Skaven armybook for Warhammer, but before the End Times, so I’d guess he came out as part of the second wave of models that followed about six months after the armybook, alongside the Hellpit Abomination and Tretch Craventail (which, to my eternal annoyance, I never bought and which is now only available at simply outrageous prices on ebay – come on GW, pop him in a “made to order” week – pretty please!)
