War Eternal – Part 3

We are the sons and daughters of Khorne, the shieldbearers of the one true god of Chaos, the sword brothers to His daemonic legions. How weak the cults of the other powers are, how pathetic the foolish schemes in which they ensnare themselves, the plots and counter-plots they use as crutches in place of honest strength. We do not need to beseech our God, or cower behind mewling spell-casters. We are strong, chosen by our God because of it, and respected accordingly. We do not beg him for gifts, or grovel before him like invertebrate creatures, bent backed and frail, whining out an addict’s need for just a little more power.

Ours is a honest bargain. Khorne offers us a portion of his strength because it is our right and we in turn spread slaughter in His name. Let the slothful and needy slaves of lesser gods decry us as crude if they will, we care not. We are closer to the heart of Chaos than they will ever be, and the butcher does not concern himself with the screaming of the sheep.Β

– from the philosophies of Skaros the Desolator, Slaughterpriest of the Bloodlords

Khorne Slaughterpriest Khornevert Or Die Wudugast (2)

Well here he is, Skaros the Desolator himself, ready to lead my little warband of Khornate savages into the Mortal Realms.

All too often the followers of Khorne are portrayed as ignorant, thuggish and crude. They care only for bloodshed and become so enamoured with their own rage that they lose all sense and coherence and flail and froth in a killing fury of self-destructive mania.Β  Personally I prefer them a little more nuanced. Thus I envision my slaughterpriest as a ruthless and methodical killer, powerful and predatory, rather than a maniacal berserker, a thoughtful killer – if no less brutal for all that.

With him painted I have the beginnings of my Khornate warband. I’ll be adding more models to it later in March, although as yet I haven’t decided exactly what. Right now I’m leaning towards getting the bloodreavers done in order to bulk up the warband a little, after all one model doesn’t make an army by itself (unless it’s Nagash of course!), but there’s always the chance I might end up distracted by one of the other possible contenders. As ever, watch this space!

He is superb mate – loving that skull mask, and really nice work on those flesh tones! This should be a cracking warband once you’re done πŸ™‚

Great work! And yeah, the frothing at the mouth uncontrollable slaughterer type for Khorne followers has been way overdone.

    • Wudugast

Aye, there’s just so many interesting stories to be told about Khorne worshippers and none of them involve being on a full-time bloodthirsty rampage. They can work well as adversaries like that but not as protagonists. Glad you like him πŸ™‚

Great paint job as always mate. Can’t quite put my finger on why he looks a little aggresive! πŸ˜‰

    • Wudugast

Yeah, I think there might be some anger management issues lurking under the surface! Glad you approve – always good to get positive feedback from a talented painter such as yourself πŸ™‚

I’ll take flattery any day. Truth is this blogging group is a hive of talent. If there is a problem with it it’s running out of superlatives to descibe what some, including yourself, are producing. Still, a nice problem to have. 😊

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are no anger management classes!

    Great pint job on him.

Like the others said, you did a great job and the flesh is extremely well-done, as in painting well-done and not well-done well-done. Perhaps my need to clarify says something about my attachment to Chaos? I also like what you did with the base. Many skulls for the throne for this guy.

    • Wudugast

I knew exactly what you meant (the person who joined him for lunch is now medium-rare!). Funnily enough I used the same technique on his skin as I used on the Goliaths, and I wanted them to look more tanned than would be normal in the sunless hive-depths due to their proximity to the forges giving them a constant cooking – so perhaps he is well done after all! Anyway, glad you like him πŸ˜€

      • Ann

I’ll have to check out your Goliaths again, as well. Painting “normal” or at least semi-normal human flesh is something I struggle with somewhat, and I like how you did it.

      • Wudugast

Well if it helps I did this with a couple of coats of Bugman’s glow, a layer of Cadian Fleshtone, a wash of Reikland Fleshshade and a highlight of Kislev Flesh. It’s my “go-to” for outdoorsy looking human’s now πŸ™‚

      • Ann

I’ll give it a whirl, thank you very much for sharing. My outdoorsy looking white guy look could use some help. πŸ™‚

Lovely bit of fluff you have written there mate and the model is damn fine too. The call of blood and skulls! Khrone will be proud!

  • imperialrebelork

A fantastic paint job man. Really like him. You e done so well with the base too.

    • Wudugast

Thanks dude πŸ™‚ The base is centred around a heap of bones and skulls from one of the old basing kits, I’ve had it kicking around for a while – just needed to find a suitable model to use it with. Then I just added more skulls around it (because sometimes – especially with Khorne – more is more).

  • FirBholg

Really don’t have a lot to add except that he looks bad ass πŸ™‚ Love the idea that followers of Khorne can be philosophers and poets too, although the subject matter of their considerations may be a little focused!

    • Wudugast

Thank you! Yeah, the idea first struck me when I was reading Betrayer by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. It opens with a quote from a book on the history of the World Eaters legion (I think – it’s been a while since I read it) which Kharn was in the middle of writing when the Heresy broke out. Naturally it remains unpublished! I loved the way it anchored him as a man, it showed that before he was a crazy killing machine he was a human being with the patience to sit and write a book. It’s a nice way of reminding ourselves that the human followers of the Gods start out like the rest of us and are twisted over time, often by noble qualities, unlike the daemons or beastmen who are born or created in the image of Chaos.

Not sure if I have the skill to write a Khornate poem but you’ve definitely tempted me to try!

Speak, damn you!
