The Ladykillers – Part 4

It seems like I’m on a bit of a roll at the moment. As well as cracking on with painting I’ve also managed to get a few Escher gangers assembled. One of my big sticking points with the Eschers has been the repetition of hairdos across the gang. With each ganger having such showy set-piece locks the duplication is all the more obvious, as compared to, for example, the uniform mohawks of the Goliath or wall-to-wall baldness of the Delaque. Regular readers will know I couldn’t tolerate the idea of cloned hairstyles existing in the gang but trying to create alternatives is a herculean task. Grafting on Dark Eldar hair is a time-consuming and challenging job and other alternatives that really play to the style of the Eschers are thin on the ground. Needless to say when the new head upgrades were released from Forge World last week I really wanted to give them a go. Following a flurry of assembly over the weekend I have to say I’m really quite impressed. Here’s the latest recruits to the gang.

Hopefully by allowing me to make the gang as I’ve always envisioned it this should be the spur I need to get some more of them painted over the next little while.

These turned out brilliant. The models were great even before the headswaps, and now they’re even nicer.

  • Thomas

    Cool crew! Forge World bits?

  • castigatoruk

Hmm…I’m not sure if it’s because of the resin’s colour difference but they look very small to me. It might be the blu-tac that’s accentuating their feet but their heads look smaller than their feet.
The Flamer girl’s head was the head I liked the most from the FW pack but it just looks off to me.
You’ll have to hurry up and paint her as I was planning on getting these and now I’m not sure ๐Ÿ˜‰

The boots on the new Escher Models are absolutely enormous. That’s what’s throwing the proportions off. I find they look much better when their boots are trimmed down a bit, actually.

    • Wudugast

Yeah, I agree with Alexis, the boots on the Eschers are rather large and the blue-tac is just accentuating it. The actual heads are exactly the same size as the plastic ones (I just went and double-checked). I also find that the Escher heads are smaller than other human heads in the range but this is less obvious on the plastic ones as their enormous hair-do’s makes the heads look bigger. It’s another reason why I find it’s not enough to just use a dark eldar head (the only other models with female features and big hair) in place of an Escher head, she ends up looking like she has a giant bonce compared to her gang-mates.

I’ll see if I can convince you once they’re painted ๐Ÿ˜‰ If anyone from Forgeworld is reading this I’m trying to save a sale for you here, so a discount or a free titan or something would be appreciated!

      • castigatoruk

Lol….make that two free titans and I’ll definitely get some ๐Ÿ˜‰
I have a Dark Eldar head on one my Escher fighters and I did notice that it was bigger than the plastic Escher heads. Fortunately I don’t mind the disparity between models as I feel it adds to the eclectic vision I have of the inhabitants of Necromunda.
I still like the new heads, but feel the one you have on the flamer girl might look better on one of the slimmer bodies such as the hand flamer/Chainsword girl.
I’m looking forward to being convinced though….so get cracking ๐Ÿ˜‰

ForgeWorld, I’m teetering…send Wudugast, 2 free Titans, and a, um, erm Sector Mortalis Zone set, erm, um, for me. Unh huh, yea.

  • Alexis West

Nice! I need to pick up one of those sets for some extra variety myself. I’ve used a couple of the same hairs with sufficiently different colours that I feel OK with it, but I’ve pretty much hit the limit of what I think I can get away with there.

The stuff from the weapon pack (particularly that Stubber) looks great too!

    • Wudugast

Cheers! Yeah, different colours of hair can be enough to make a difference (although I always insist on making a rod for my own back by having to make everything unique). Personally I think this is something that Necromunda, especially the Eschers, have really been needing. The new Goliath heads look amazing but it still seems weird to me that they get 26 new heads, when the plastic kit was already doing a great job and there are plenty of suitable alternatives across the GW range, but the Eschers – who’ve been crying out for something like this – only get 12. It’s probably just greed, this should be more than enough for a big gang now, but if they wanted to release another set for the Eschers I wouldn’t say no.

  • imperialrebelork

Really cool Wudu and Iโ€™m seriously tempted by the upgrades.

  • Faust

Yea, I think I would need to some painted up. A few of the heads I thought looked good in the pics, I’m now not so crazy about. The mohawk one is probably my fave now. Did you pick up the Van Saar by chance? It looks like you might be able to swap a few of those heads with Eschers for variety.

Those guns look pretty large too. Is that a plasma cannon on the first one?

    • Wudugast

Funnily enough I wasn’t too sold on the mohawk one when I saw it on the FW website but it’s one of my favourites now too. I didn’t go for the Van Saar heads, although I do like some of them (and some would definitely make for interesting Escher heads). Partly I’m not planning on having that many Van Saar, partly I just can’t afford it (especially with so much other awesome stuff coming out at the moment). I’m also planning for my Van Saar to be almost entirely wearing masks, with only two of them (the leader and one of the champions) showing any of their face at all, so the upgrade set isn’t that useful for me. That said they would make for cool heads for random hivers and at some point I want to convert up a bunch of civilians (don’t hold your breath mind!) so I might pick it up then.

Yeah, these guns are pretty big, although most of them are “heavy” weapons so it’s to be expected. The first one does indeed have a plasma gun, then we have a hand-flamer and chainsword, a flamer and a heavy stubber (I’m absolutely in love with the heavy stubber girl by the way, usually I’m all ears to criticism but I won’t hear a bad word said about her!)

      • Faust

Well, I’ll have to see what I can tack on for extra shipping when the time comes. Could be the Van Saar heads. Especially since the teen likes them.

Funny, when he was first looking at the pics of the Van Saar and letting me know what models he was interested in. He chose mainly the ones without the helmets. I thought those were the coolest, but he didn’t like them. Something about them looking too alien. We all have different tastes for sure!

  • Pete S/ SP

They look much better, I try to get as much variation in with my gang too.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    • Wudugast

Yeah, personalising each member of your gang and following them through their (turbulent and often very brief) lives is half the fun of Necromunda, having a bit of variety in their appearance helps you pick out each character ๐Ÿ™‚

  • theimperfectmodeller

I’ll leave all the comments on big heads, small heads and big boots to you and fellow bloggers who know much more about this stuff than I do. As a figure painter all I can say is these look pretty cool to me and I’m really looking forward to seeing them painted up in due course.

    • Wudugast

See, I may be in a minority here but I like big boots (and I cannot lie). I need them to keep my big feet warm. For me enjoying painting the model is really the beginning and end of the matter, so long as I’m having fun painting it I’m happy and these look like they’ll be a real joy to work on ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Crimson Oracle

Man, selling me on the forgeworld upgrades hard, I knew I wanted the heads but those guns just look so good

    • Wudugast

I know – I was determined that I didn’t need any of the weapon upgrades, that they were just a way of gouging money from us, that if I really wanted to I could kitbash my own, but dammit they got me, hook, line and sinker!

      • Crimson Oracle

I really like the Escher aesthetic so I suppose itโ€™s no surprise that their particular spin on bigger guns would look good

Speak, damn you!
