The Cult of the Abyssal Gaze – Part 2

“And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee”.

Fragment of text attributed to the pre-Imperial Terran Friedrich Nietzsche, believed to be predicting  the coming of the Tyranids

As you may have gathered from the previous post a xenos invasion of the Underhive is underway. We’re getting into the darkest part of the winter, time to stay indoors in the warm, paint miniatures and perhaps even play some games. My partner has been talking about wanting to try out Genestealer cultists in Necromunda and so, in a fine case of biting off more than you can chew, I’ve decided to try and get a starting gang ready before Christmas. You are welcome to cheer me on or mock me when I fail, whichever floats your boat.

Dipping a toe into the waters with a couple of test models, here’s the first recruit, Neophyte Gaius…

…accompanied by one of the wonderfully belligerent looking aberrant models, a monstrosity which goes by the name Abomination Omega.

Having tallied up what looks like a suitable starting list, I’ve still got seven more cultists to paint over the next couple of weeks, not an insurmountable challenge but expect to see a fair number of insidious aliens around here for the next little while.

    Superb- I really like them.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    Beautiful man!

Well, as you know, I’m also in crunch time with painting/assembling minis for games. I wish us both the best of luck!

Love the colors on those. I’m guessing that’s a Citadel Orange of some sort? I also know I’ve seen that blue/grey before, but having a hard time placing it. Memory fails when I end up getting up extra early!

Thanks mate – yeah, I think we can both cheer each other on here, I always think these challenges are easier when there’s someone else in the race with you.

For the orange I start with Jokaero orange (not the best colour to work over in terms of the shade but it forms a better undercoat than a layer paint like Troll Slayer), then Troll Slayer Orange, then a wash of Agrax in the recesses, then a highlight of Fire Dragon Bright. You’ll recognise the blue-grey because it’s the same colour I use for the collars and some of the leather armour on the Goliaths. It’s pretty straightforward, just Dark Reaper with a layer of Dark Reaper/Fenrisian Grey, then a highlight of pure Fenrisian.

Well yesterday’s progress set me behind, as I prepped and sub-assembled the Orlocks. Kinda makes me want to do an assembly review post, but not sure I have enough to say. I should be concentrating on a few projects just to get them done, but still jumping around a bit. It’s all progress either way.

That’s funny, I have neither Jokaero Orange or Dark Reaper. That’s probably why I couldn’t quite guess them. Dark Reaper is on order. I’ve found Troll Slayer a little difficult to work with, so putting a base of Jokaero base makes sense. Another one on the order list!

Orange and blue, the classic movie poster combo! Gets used all the time for a reason.

I really like the deep shading you did on Abomination Omega, especially in combination with the much lighter scars. That puckered twist of red just below the scar on the right side of his back in particular. Really drives home that something is seriously wrong with this being. And then there’s the contrast of Gaius, who could pass for human with the right hat and a pair of gloves.

    • Wudugast

I really love that about the genestealer cults, the degree of contrast between the models is so much fun to work with, yet you don’t end up with an absolute circus as you do with Chaos (which, of course, I also love – but for different reasons).

Looking again at Gaius it really struck me that he looks a lot more human than the new Delaques, which I think makes for a nice, subtle, blurring of the lines. Really pleased with the Aberrant as well so thanks for the feedback, that’s exactly the effect I was looking for (plus I’m tickled to discover that he triggers Facepuke’s algorithms, he shows too much flesh apparently and the little bots get frightened he might be pornographic 😀 ).

They are spot on mate, the skin tone is superb, and you know how much I love the orange/blue!

    • Wudugast

Thanks man 🙂 Yeah, the orange and blue works really well together, now I think back your stuff was undoubtedly an inspiration on choosing this scheme. It’s not a colour scheme I’ve used much before now but I really like it (which is good news as there’s plenty more of these dudes to paint!)

Speak, damn you!
