Wild At Heart – Part 1

Whilst it may not always look it I’m still chipping away at Necromunda behind the scenes as my gangs gear up to take their stab at controlling the Underhive. For the moment I’ve been trying to keep other projects on the boil, with the result that I’ve not really finished much (read; anything) to show here but the release of House Van Saar at the weekend has given my creative energies another boost so expect to see something gang related soonish. Before that however I’m hoping to tackle a bunch of neglected models (more on that tomorrow) so to tide you over here’s a look at my, as yet unpainted, conversion of Gor Half-horn.

I love the idea of Gor Half-horn and, although he’s been rather eclipsed by the arrival of a shorter, timepiece wrecking, impressively bearded chap named Grendlsen, the impact of seeing a beastman back on the mean streets of the Imperium isn’t to be overlooked. That said although the model is extremely nice, it isn’t quite nice enough to rush out and buy – especially when funds are limited and there are lots of other Underhive associated treats demanding my attention. However a quick dig around in the bitsbox revealed enough components to build my own.

Working on him has reminded me how long I’ve left my previous attempts to tackle beastmen in 40k and got me thinking about converting some more, perhaps as Hive Scum or as part of my planned Chaos gang. In the meantime any feedback on Gor is much appreciated.

    He’s awesome mate – good call on saving the cost of buying the new shiny-shiny!! One thought – he looks very imperial right now, which is great if you’re going for Beasmen Imperial Guard look, but not sure this works for an underhive bounty hunter… Depends on the fluff you create for him I guess, but is it worth shaving off the winged skull iconography?

      Hmmm… You may be right, let me have a think about it. On the one hand I wanted him to have some Imperial iconography on him somewhere, both the Rogue Trader original and the new Forgeworld version do, plus I wanted to make it clear that this chap is a sanctioned, Imperial, bounty hunter rather than just some dude (or dare I say it – an agent of Chaos). For those reasons the winged skulls will probably stay – but like I say, let me think about it. As a long time Chaos fan shaving off the symbols of the Imperium is almost second nature when I pick up a model now, like cleaning mould-lines…

    Great stuff Wudu. I only just read about Mr Gor. Youโ€™ve done extremely well emulating the original.

      Cheers man – I had a couple of photos (one of the new version and one of the Rogue Trader incarnation) and basically just worked from those, trying to make sure as many bits as possible matched up.

    I thought you’d given him his cigar in the second photo, and then was wondering where it had disappeared to in the others. That lasgun is a nice little piece I’ve not seen before. Is it from the Mil Temp set?

      No cigar yet – I’ll sort that for him shortly. The holstered lasgun is very handy – and yes, it’s from the (absolute goldmine) Tempestus Scions kit.

    Great selection of parts there, the combo of Scion parts with the beastman bits is inspired!

    In terms of feedback, liking the look so far, and I love that he appears to be squinting down the length of his chainsword! Only suggestions I can think of might be to maybe angle the lasgun in his back down a little more, and from the third pic he looks like heโ€™s leaning a little too forward, but the others look fine, so could just be a quirk of the photo.

    Also, sounds like you might be able to do an all beastman gang from the sounds of the Venator rules in the new White Dwarf, if you were so inclined ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Thank you – both for the compliment and the very useful feedback.

      Regarding the angle of the lasgun, I tend to agree with you. Part of the trouble is that he needs the small backpack to cover the part of the Scion’s back where their own backpack would anchor, which means I need to work around that with the holstered gun. However when I picked it up to re-examine it the holstered gun broke off in my hand so I’ll take that as the converting gods agreeing with you and I’ll see what I can do to improve matters.

      Regarding him leaning forwards that’s a trick of perspective – his goat legs have a real lean on them but the torso itself is as straight as I can get it without looking awkward on the legs.

      As for being inclined to make an all beastman Necromunda gang – you know, I just might be planning such a thing as we speak…

    That’s really cool work mate. I think you’ve captured the feel of the original rogue trader model perfectly.

    Great work! The ForgeWorld prices really bug me, especially living in the U.S. Seeing your conversion is quite the inspiration. Did you make his cyber-eye from green stuff or was it another bit you found?

      Oh yeah, the Forgeworld stuff is generally incredibly nice but it’s a right gouge, even here in the UK. I’m all for supporting the game but at the end of the day I also need to eat and pay rent ๐Ÿ˜‰

      The cyber-eye is greenstuff but it was pretty straight-forward. Make a tiny ball of greenstuff, press it into his face over the eye you want to replace and smooth it down, leaving a swollen, damaged edge (which I’ll paint to look a bit bruised and unhealthy – this is underhive augmetics after all, but he’s so tough he probably got it without anaesthetic). Then I used the tip of a mechanical pencil to stamp out the cyber-eye itself.

    Yea, I mainly try to steer clear of FW, just because of those prices. I was pleased with the model for the Blood Bowl ‘fat rat’ Star Player, but generally I feel like I’m just getting gouged and would be better off doing my own conversion.

      Aye, some of their stuff is amazing (Slate Merdena and Macula for example, or Eyros Slagmyst) but the price of them is hard to swallow. In both cases they’re models I’d love to own but they’re a little bit pricy for my taste – and it’s hard to imagine how they justify charging that much for them.

    Fantastic work here. I thought I’d commented but it seems it was one of those occasions where I start a comment, get distracted, wander off, and then later shut down the PC for the night, thinking I’ve done it.(twice, embarassingly!)
    Anyway, I’m really very impressed by what you’ve done with this guy, and you should expect to see him cloned sometime hopefully this decade.

      You know, I’m actually quite relieved to hear I’m not the only one who does that! Glad you like him, he was a lot of fun to build and now he’s got me wondering about starting a full beastman gang for Necromunda, by way of resurrecting my 40k beastmen project which has been languishing unloved for the last couple of years.
