Remember the skullcrab from Black Edge I painted way back in June? It’s just a cracking little model, packed with character – what could better encapsulate the essence of 40k than a tiny robot-spider made from someone’s skull (presumably someone with quite a big head mind you)? Alas, for various reasons, the other two skullcrabs have sat untouched ever since. Inspired by the skullbirds however I realised it was time to expand my collection of skull-headed fauna and finally get them painted.
A group shot of the three finished skulls together. Checking the Black Edge store I notice that the skullcrabs aren’t currently available – although I’m hopeful that Mark (of HeresyOfUs – and the man behind Black Edge) is working on them, alongside his various other twisted and brilliant creations.
As the Imperial forces advance a scuttling wave of skullcrabs travels ahead of them.
Whilst I had skulls on the brain (surely a normal state of affairs) I nabbed this servo-skull for a quick repaint as well.
You really can’t have too many cherubs, servo-skulls and other skull-faced cyber-creatures in 40k so I’ll try to build some more in the near(-ish) future – watch this space!

A cool collections of skulls glued onto other things!

That’s a neat summation of the Games Workshop aesthetic if ever I heard one 😀

Firstly, ace painting/converting. Secondly, best summary ever!

They look cool mate. Nice paint job on them. I will be getting them up on the store soon but I just need to create a varient first. I’ll do a post soon of new things
April 26th, 2018 at 6:09 am
Looking forward to it 🙂 What do you have in mind for the variant? I’m still hoping you’ll do a “chaos-y” set at some stage.

That will be the variant. All horns and deformities 🙂

Great news – I’m looking forward to seeing it 😀

Those are great. I wonder do they make webs to catch the flying servo skulls…?

I’m starting to envision a whole skull-ecology now. Personally I reckon the Imperium is overrun with feral servo-skulls and cyber-cherubs.

For sure. I bet they’re like hermit crabs. If their skull breaks or they spot a nice new noggin, the mechanical components just discard the old shell and pick up a new one. Or just remove it straight from the unappreciative meat sack that it’s attached to. Cut out the middle man, literally.
I just got the pun in the title too, so masterful was its subtlety!

Nice work! How did you make the red light in the eyes pop? Did you use ink, a gloss, …?
Seeing these 3d parts, really makes me yearn for some open hand bits (right and left). Or shoulder pad bits. Those would be great for Blood Bowl and other conversions.
April 26th, 2018 at 6:19 am
For the red eyes I chose a moment when I thought my hand was steady enough, I prayed to any gods I thought might be listening and I went with a tiny highlight. I’m pleased to say I think it worked but there was definitely a moment of adrenaline with each one!
I’d agree that open hands would be very useful, as would hands holding tools. These may be the WARhammer universes but there are still times when you want to make a civilian and making a model which isn’t launching itself into combat isn’t easy.

I had a good laugh at the ‘steady hands’ moment. I always take a deep breath and hope that there isn’t some nearly invisible imperfection that is going to make placing that tiny glob of paint and a nightmare.
Good call on the hands holding tools. That would be pretty nice as well!

Khorne however is upset that bits of his chair are scuttling away…

Very cool mate!

Cheers man 😀
