The Emperor’s Angels – Part 3

So having demonstrated, to my satisfaction at least, that it’s possible to make truescale assault marines from Primaris bodies, what about devastators? Then there’s the fact that I’ve been looking for a way to use the wonderfully old-school missile launcher from Betrayal at Calth since the moment I saw it.

I’ll admit to feeling a bit conflicted over using the Mk.X head. On the one hand they’re a bit of a guilty pleasure for me (I’ve got no time for Primaris marines but I really, really like those flat face plates – don’t judge me ok!). On the other hand I don’t want to include anything that makes him look like a Primaris marine with a rocket launcher, he’s supposed to be a truescale marine. Hopefully if I just don’t mention it no-one will notice.

So far so good I reckon – although of course feel free to tell me if you think otherwise. That said the missile launcher was always going to be the most straightforward of the heavy weapons to convert. Time to dig around in the bits box in search of something a little more challenging…

Looks great mate! I must admit, I have a huge soft spot for that pattern of missile launcher 🙂

Looking good man, I’m surprised that I haven’t seen more of these sort of conversions to be honest.

    • Wudugast

Cheers. Yeah, I’ve seen a few but not nearly as many as I’d have expected. I think more will appear in time though, they’re a lot of fun to build and look a hell of a lot better than the old marines (IMO).

Might mention it to my friend, he collects Word Bearers, I’m sure he’d like to know that the old shoulder pads still fit. Saying that, if GW were clever about it they’ll release a CSM equivalent in the near future.

      • Wudugast

Yeah, it was a clever move on GW’s part to make the shoulderpads and heads compatible – depending on how far one wants to take it one can convert pretty much any flavour of space marine using the existing components from day one. Once I’ve cleared my feet a little I’m planning to explore making truescale chaos marines from the primaris bodies as well, I think there could be some awesome stuff to be done there. I’ve already made three Khorne Berserkers in this style which were great fun so expect more of those to be on their way.

As for releasing primaris scale chaos marines I think GW would be daft not to. There’s already been foreshadowing in the codexes – for example Fabious Bile survives a run-in with a bunch of Primaris marines and has dedicated his efforts since to capturing more and discovering how to make his own. I also just read the Dark Imperium novel (surprisingly good as it turns out) and there’s plenty in there to suggest that the Primaris marines could fall under the sway of Chaos, that they’ve never had the time or experience to build up the mental fortitude against its temptations and so on. Of course they’re genetically programmed to be incredibly loyal but so were the Word Bearers and look what happened to them…

Looks cool man. The missile launcher looks like it’d do some damage and nestles well on his shoulder.

    • Wudugast

Cheers mate 🙂 I can’t claim credit for making the missile launcher fit so neatly onto his shoulder though, that’s just how GW made the parts! To be honest this was a pretty straightforward merging of the two kits (rocket-launcher etc and primaris marine). The next one however is proving to be a little more complicated…

Mate this is awesome, its like that launcher belongs there, im so doing this.
Im after doing a true scale Blood Angel force.
Any chance you could do a jump pack assault version?

Could you do a parts list or link when you do these please?

    • Wudugast

Thank you very much! As it happens I’m leaning towards making these into Blood Angels successors (Knights of Blood – will be very curious to see if they’ve made their way into the new codex). I’m currently considering how to make some Sanguinary Guard at this scale – will undoubtedly be more complicated than this but seems like a fun challenge and should look amazing once completed. I just need to find the time and source the bits. I’ve also got a plan to make scaled up terminators although that’s proceeding a little more slowly so far.

As for assault marines I’ve made two so far, you can find them at the links below. Hopefully that’ll provide some inspiration 🙂

As for a parts list I’m not sure I could remember them all off the top of my head, although of course the main components are always going to come from whatever kit you’re looking to replicate (e.g. Assault Marines), built over a Primaris intercessor body. The key secret ingredient though is reaver arms. Most space marine bits fit neatly to Primaris bodies (e.g. shoulder pads, heads etc are all the same size across the range). However the arms of the old marines are too short for Primaris bodies (although I think I managed to get away with it here), and the intercessor arms are moulded holding a bolter. For arms holding other weapons (as you’d want with assault marines for instance) reaver arms will save the day.
