Much as I love the modern range of plastic Orks I’ll admit to a real fondness for their older metal predecessors as well. Indeed the very first Games Workshop miniature I painted, way back when, was an Ork, one of the old meganobs – and indeed it is high time he was joined by some comrades of a more recent vintage (why yes – that is a hint of things to come!).
Today though it’s the turn of a model that’s older still, a weirdboy which appeared way back in that seminal tome Waaargh! Da Orks. With his crazy hair, wispy moustache and baggy clothes he doesn’t have that much in common with the rusty-armoured space barbarians of more recent times but I’ve always loved him nonetheless and when the chance came to add him to the growing Waargh! I wasn’t going to miss it.
Rather than worry about the differences however I’ve tried to emphasise them with his (almost jester-like) purple robes and bling. After all he’s a weirdboy and thus entitled to look a little strange (the clue is in the name and all that).
As ever your thoughts and feedback are welcome!

Brilliant model, so much character going on there, and a cracking paint job – lovin’ the purple!

Thanks! I reckoned it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to paint an ork in purple togs and I wasn’t going to miss it 🙂 I did consider giving him a harlequin-style pattern instead but decided that would be over-egging it (that and the fact that it seemed really, really difficult when I started!)

He’s fantastic. I’ve never seen this model before. He’s so cukey and, well yes, weird looking haha. I want one, I want one now!! I really like the purple jacket and the brass buttons. I can’t stop looking at him. He’s so full of character.

Cheers! He’s just awesome isn’t he? Given his vintage he’s still a very impressive model, ahead of his time in many ways although undoubtedly also a product of it (sadly I very much doubt we’ll see any Orks looking quite like this coming out of the GW studio any time soon!)

I love all Orks but characterful ones are the best.

Cheers! It’s been a long standing ambition to add him to the collection, glad to see it realised at last.

Absolutely fantastic. Really awesome model and looks totally at home… So long as he’s meant to be a weird boy. The whole jester outfit just works so well.

Cheers mate – very kind of you to say so! Yes, very much meant as a Weirdboy just as the designers intended (he couldn’t be anything else really!) 🙂

Have you had it a long time or did you find it available second hand somewhere

I picked him up off ebay for an absolute song a few months ago. I think the guy selling must not have known how old and potentially valuable he was. At the time I thought there must be something wrong with him, a miscast or something, but hoped I could repair it or cover it over, but it turns out I was just lucky 🙂
